I did look into the coat question.
On vetinfo.com I found a question from someone whose cat had been checked for inflammatory bowel disease. In his answer Mike Richards DVM answered that it might be a good idea to have the cats serum protein value checked. IBD (and I (me, Steffi) assume there are other conditions that can do this) can cause difficulty absorbing protein or vitamins and low serum protein can lead to a reddish discoloration of the coat.
