I am writing this at 2:46 a.m. in a town outside of the Montreal area - why so late? Coincidentally it's because of someone who doesn't subscribe to the same common sense as you and your partner. I was woken up by cats fighting outside - what a horrible sound and it just worries me - are they all okay? I have done adoptions for a local shelter and one of our criteria is that cats be given the same sense of protection and security as dogs - that means they are not left to wander unsupervised outside! For the reasons you mentioned in your tribute to your cat and also due to predators. It is beyond me how someone can love their little furry friend and let it just walk out the door not knowing if they will come back - and trust me, if you say "mine always gets back home safely" it is just because you're lucky. Also, many abandoned cats that live in neighborhoods are more often, sadly, carriers of FIV and FELV (in the last few months two friends have had to euthanize 3 outdoor cats who tested positive when they decided to bring them inside to live with their family). PLEASE keep them safe, just like dogs - do we actually need a law to tell us to do this! Isn't seeing the selfish way people drive enough - or knowing that some of your neighbors don't want them on their property enough (recently there was a case where a neighbor euthanized their neighbors cat - no proof necessary when taken to the vet to do this!). The saying If you love something set it free does NOT apply to your cats.
