I agree with Karen. How old is he? A very young hammy would probably need more time.. like I have a new hammy (had him about 3 days) and what I am doing is putting my hand in (letting him sniff me), no sudden movements and speaking softly to him. I will carry on doing that for a few days because he is still getting used to his surroundings and still kind of nervous.

If you want a tamer hammy next time, and don't want to go through taming them, I would advise getting to know the hammies at the pet shop before buying, and working out which ones are the confident ones who are happy around people.

Just keep trying with him, I am sure he will come round if you take things slowly and don't pick him up straight away. Also hand feeding them is quite good.
