I too have a black cat who is fascinated with water. Not quite to that extent, but he comes running when he hears the water running: sink, tub, toilet, washing machine--no matter what. He acts like he's in crisis if he can't watch it fill up.
Also, we can't keep a proper dish of water down for any of our animals without him either knocking it over to "skate" in the water, or splash his paw around in there like crazy. We keep a rubber floor mat under our Drinkwell.
I have a theory about these water loving cats: 1) Most of them are black, though I heard that some orange Tabbies like water, too; 2) because they are black, they are warm natured and the water helps keep them cool; 3) it may be a characteristic of their breed.
There is an American short hair breed, ironically called the Bombay. To read more, go to this link: http://www.fanciers.com/breed-faqs/bombay-faq.html. I think we accidentally got one as a rescue: he's 14 lbs., laid back, muscular, long body, glossy black coat, yellow eyes, talkative and loving. He likes to be alpha over the entire household, enjoys tussling with our dog, and has a fatherly affection toward our smaller female cat. Tends to be a watch cat--will draw our attention to things in the home that are out of place, even if he's the one that made them that way.
