Sounds like the kitten wanted comfort, and maybe he did smell the hormones. As you undoubtedly already know, many cats knead and/or nuzzle as a way of getting or expressing a sense of comfort. My family once had a schipperke - a small Belgian breed that resembles the Belgian, and some say derives from the Belgian, or perhaps from some ancestor breed that produced them both.
