Laura, that is EXACTLY how I feel about most holidays! Commercialized or not, who cares? It gives me an 'excuse' to spoil someone other than myself, or, a 'reason' to do something I wouldn't normally remember to do. Sure, I don't need a holiday to do that...but, I don't need lots of things in life that I have/want.
I say just go with the feelings, and if it happens to coincide with a holiday, or, it takes it up a notch (props to the big E), do it.
When I hear, "oh, it just is this, or, it is just that..." (referring to the commercial aspect of things) it makes me think- well, why choose NOT to do something that might bring a smile to someone's face, just to stick it to 'the man'? Doesn't make much sense to me.
In my family, Valentine's Day has ALWAYS been more about family love than about romantic love.....whoever says you need a romantic partner to celebrate love? Most of my cards came from and went to family, and always have.
