Basically, they were the American left-wing version of the crazy religious groups over in Northern Ireland, like the IRL (I think that's one of them). I assume you are referring to the IRA (Irish Republican Army.) I'm not sure religious would be an adjective to describe the IRA. Generally speaking, religious and left-wing don't go together real well. The IRA's cause is independence from England. Don't know if that makes them religious or left-wing.....
