I'm considering getting a coati. Does anyone have one? what are the good and bad part of having one, if you know what I mean? I've heard that they are really hard to take care of and that they tend to get snippy as they get older. At the same time, i've heard they are just as affectionate as a cat or dog can be. Also, can anyone tell me what sort playthings they need? That's one thing I've yet to find.

Are they sold as pets? Certainly appears that they are "wild" animals to me. Thanks for the links, Aly.

I just did a search on them as pets. It is legal in some states, depending on the exotic animal laws.

Yes coatis are exotics reguarly kept as pets. They are legal here in OR and I've had the pleasure of knowing many of them. Cute little critters, however they are very smart and not suitable for apartment life of any kind. While some people do keep them in the house they should have an outdoor enclosure as well. They can get into pretty much everything, and also know how to unlock doors and open cubbards. I personally find it cruel to keep a coati indoors. They really like marshmellows....just a little tidbit there. :-p The best advice I can give you would be to seek out a breeder. They can answer your questions better than anyone else.

I'm sure there are forums out there like this one, but, more aimed at people with exotic pets like that, too. And, besides a breeder, the internet will be a great source of information on their care. Good luck, I've seen on animal planet that someone had one as a pet. She had to take it to a lady that had a preserve or something, though, as she was no longer able to care for it. It was hard for her to do it, but, she did it because it was the best thing for her pet. I don't know how long they live, but, I know they are a big responsibility. Good luck.
