I don't know of any Golden Retriever rescues in my erea of Ohio! I would like to start up a rescue! I can't beleive that someone can be so mean to such a loveable animal. Some people are animals themselves!

Hi all, it's been a long while since I've had time to check out the site. Since I've last posted, we packed up a house, moved, and inherited another puppy that was dumped in our neighbor's backyard (they couldn't keep him because they have an Amstaff that would have eaten him for lunch). His name is George and is some sort of a hound. He is just too cute for words, and of course, we are going to keep him.
Anyway, the reason for the post is that bestfriends.com is really www.bestfriends.org

Check the Web site of Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue at: ygrr.org There is a list of all the Golden rescue organizations in the country. Also, if you are as much of a Golden lover as I am, you will find interesting and useful information.
Some people are below the category of animals. Animals are not cruel to one another

I volunteer with Best Friends here in Las Vegas, NV. They are always having training for opening no kill shelters and rescues. They are a fantastic resource! I believe that there web address is www.bestfriends.org

I believe the main difference between a rescue group and a shelter is funding. Most rescue groups do not get state funding (or very little) and shelters generally do, in fact, many shelters are state agencies. Shelters also need private funding, but since they are "not-for-profits" there are some grants available to them. I doubt there are many for rescue groups unless they are registered as "not-for-profits" with the tax paperwork and such like. I understand it can take up to a year to get that type of designation (or more) and there are TONS of paperwork to go through. If you're willing to do that, then the absolute best of luck to you. It gladdens my heart to see someone want to do this. Do be aware, this isn't a cheap proposition and you need to line up some of your foster families before you accept even that first dog. Too many of them will back out on you or cannot take certain animals (usually behavior problems), or something. You also might want to hook up with a decent vet that will offer "group rates" for the rescue dogs. Find a good animal rights attorney and check on licensing if you intend to keep any of the animals in your own home. There may be laws against ANY kind of business in your area.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but these are some of the answers you are going to have to have before you can start a group. Do you have a PetsMart nearby? They often have rescue groups and shelters in to bring animals for adoption and you might want to talk to them (the groups) about what it takes to start a group and talk to PetsMart to line up times when you can bring animals in for adoption. That is probably the greatest thing about PetsMart -- they don't sell cats or dogs, they offer space for adoptions at no charge to the groups using the space. Of course, it's a great write-off for PetsMart, but it's great public relations, too and a more responsible stance than encouraging puppy and kitty mills to continue indiscriminate breeding. Oops, didn't meant to get on another soapbox. Well, good luck with your quest and let us know what you find out.

Hi Karen. My photo has not been on the website yet,but I think my son's has. We are having a HUGE puppy adoption on Saturday we hope to adopt 25 puppies out. I am a volunteer who helps with weekly mobile adoptions and I am a foster parent.It is great fun. I try to go to the sanctuary monthly, but I am lagging this month. It is a fantastic place for a vacation. The sanctuary is gorgeous. Come see it sometime.

Hi my name is Sue I have just rescued my second Saint Bernard that I have called Jenny. My first was Sebastion he had a great temperment at first but because he was so ill treated and so over weight when we first got him he had to have two operations on his back legs because his ligerments snapped. Lucky I always have my dogs insured but because both the opperations were done so close together he turned nasty. The vet said it was caused by all the gas he had to have because of the X rays and the opperations. Of course we kept him and loved him he was our boy he never hurt me but he would bite anyone else. We had him from when he was 19 months old until 11/11/2000 poppy day when he died, he was 10 years 11 months. It is good to rescue a dog but look at the dog and see if there is anything wrong with it be very very careful.

Well, George is no longer very little...he's 6 months old (by the vet's estimation) and he is over 50 pounds!! He is a real lover...whomever dumped him lost out on a real prize. He loves to cuddle, but won't give kisses...don't know about that one yet.
As for the rescue, I think that's on hold for right now, because we live in the city limits and we only have about 1/4 of an acre and funds are pretty tight right now because of the move. We are still working on it for the future, however. Thanks for being interested!
