This is Coconut, she is a one yr. old netherland dwarf mix, and Piglet (aptly named!) the Guinea Pig. She is just a short hair calico. I got Piglet about two months ago and she lives in with Coconut and they are inseperable. Piglet cries if I take out Coconut without her. Actually pines for her. So cute. Anyway here are the pics....

oh so cuuute!! they are such good buddies! thats too cute. I love buns & piggies. I cant wait to get another bunny in a few weeks! I just love piglet's eye patch! teehee Coconut looks a lot bigger than a netherland dwarf! hehe She looks just like a Californian..

Did you know one of the parents was a netherland dwarf? If so, then perhaps shes a netherland dwarf/californian mix! Did you get her at a shelter?

I have one rabbit named Thelmer, she`s in my sig, and My sister has a guinea pig named Herbie!
We also have two dogs, P.J. and Bailey,Two cats,Barclay and Pumpkin,and 11 fish.

Actually the House Rabbit Society recommends that if you don't have two bunnies to get your single bunny a pet, like a guinea pig.....

yeah, Ive never heard of any problems with keeping the two species together, I mean it would make sense to me since they are so similar. have you heard about problems with keeping them together, tikeyas_mom? It would be good to know for future reference.

We recommend that at work too, especially if someone has a very territorial bunny. ^_^ My boss recently brouht home a gorgeous piggy to live with her Dutch rabbit, Easter. Speaking of Easter, I MUST get some pictures of him up here, his one blue eye in particular....

Not surprising the house rabbit society recommends it since it will be the pig most likely to get killed.

They are not similar at all, having different behaviour and dietary requirements. And the thought of a pig being used as a companion for a territorial rabbit makes my blood run cold - that poor pig.

Rabbits can kill pigs with a kick, either outright or by causing fatal internal damage. I have unfortunately been at the vets when the result of such an incident came in - the pig was gurgling and suffocating because it had been kicked breaking some ribs and puncturing a lung. Needless to say that will haunt me forever and the pig was put down. The kick probably won't be on purpose but as the rabbit Binky's about or moves normally. I know of 3 pigs who have been killed this way - none outright but through internal damage.

The diet is also a problem - guinea pigs cannot eat rabbit food as they must receive extra vit C from the mix and some rabbit foods contain anti-biotics fatal to pigs, also they need a lot of fresh veg daily, the amounts which would give a rabbit diarrhoea.

I completely disagree with risking guinea pigs lives by keeping them with/letting them play with rabbits (one kick is all it takes). A rabbit cannot communicate with a pig like it can another rabbit (and vice versa). And guinea pigs are highly social needing the company of their own kind.

It appears the two animals in the pictures are very happy together, but all it takes is for the much larger rabbit to accidentally strike the pig whilst hopping about and the pig will be seriously hurt/killed.

Pigs can live to 8 years or more, I wonder how long the average lifespan is when housed with a rabbit?

hmm wow.. scary stuff. And thanks for sharing the info and experiences youve seen, shellonabeach! I had never heard anything bad about having the 2 species as buddies. I had never heard of housing them together though either until it was mentioned here.

And when I said they are similar I meant like in the ways one could compared ferrets and skunks, frogs and lizards, fish and snails, cats and dogs. I didnt mean to say they are the same species lol I know they have many behavioural and dietary needs. But yeah, I appreciate the info though! Just wanted to clarify. haha
