    G, please

This one was a really hard one. I couldn't find the author or character as listed anywhere. Nor the quote. Plenty of MacDonald's, none with S as a middle initial.

Where did you find this one, Wom?

The one J. S. MacDonald I found was an Australian artist and later art critic and director of a couple of Aussie art institutions.

I am not sure if that is the person, though the connection seems kind of obvious...will await Wom's information.

Ok, I'll give you all a little history behind this quote. J.S. Macdonald was an Australian artist, but his fame was more recognised as an art critic.
The quote I used, was a quote he used circa 1920's about a very famous Australian artist called Margaret Preston.
Now I'll give you the link.........Margaret Preston was taught art in various art colleges by famous Australian artists when she was a young girl. My great uncle, a William Lister Lister, was one of her teachers...I have some of his paintings and of course, lots and lots of his writings and stuff, including art by some of his students.....none of Prestons....her works are worth megabucks.
    Some pics for you all...........

    "Afternoon Clearing" William Lister lister

"The Site for the Capital of Canberra 1912" William Lister Lister
He won the Commonwealth Art Prize for this painting. It hangs adjacent to the door of the Prime Ministers Office in Canberra.

    "Coastal View" William Lister Lister
This is one of mine....hanging right behind me as I'm typing this.

"The Coast at Thirroul" William Lister Lister.
As you can see, his forte was landscapes and seascapes.

Margaret Rose MacPherson (Margaret Preston) 1909

    "Still life" Margaret Preston

"Thunbergia (Black Eyed Susan)" Margaret Preston

    "Aboriginal Landscape" Margaret Preston

    "The Verandah" Margaret Preston

    more........................

    "Still Life" Margaret Preston

"After the Rain" Mollie Flaxman (another of Lister's students). This one belongs to me.

"Path through the Trees" Mollie Flaxman. I own this one to.

"Quiet Corner" Mollie Flaxman. I'm hunting this one down.

Esther Paterson 1910 (another of Lister's students)

    "Self Portrait" Esther Paterson

    "The Yellow Gloves" Esther Paterson

    "Self Portrait" 1916 Esther Paterson

The rear of the last painting, where she has dedicated her self portrait to her teacher William Lister Lister.
it says "To W. Lister Lister. Wish every fond wish for 1916. Love, Esther Paterson.

I saw the reference to James Stuart MacDonald but passed it by. I, for some reason, was concentrating on authors and fashion critics.

    good puzzle

    devious but good
