When I was growing up during the Reagan administration, I was committed to the news. I would make an effort to be informed about what was happening in the world and around the country. It was harder to be informed back then, but that was a reality I could accept, and it was a commitment I was willing to make. I cared about what was happening in the country, and around the world.
I carried a rebellious torch wherever I went, and felt as if I was part of Howard Beale’s personal army. “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!” My battle cry echoed the frustration of my disillusioned peers, and I could feel a constant pulse of political energy because I lived for news and was “in the know”.
Fast forward a few years to present day. I’m a lazy adult who DEMANDS his news be packaged and delivered immediately. I care less about integrity, less about facts, and less about current affairs. I care more about instant gratification and defending my ego against political opposition. When did I become the type of person I used to resent? When did I stop being mad as hell, and start being quietly indifferent? Dude, where’s my attention span???
