Big Thanks to Sandy Frost, Kohala, cats and frog

The Frostfrog would like to publicly thank Kohala, Sandy Frost, the frog (well, the two frogs, its just that one of them stayed in the dark and so did not become imprinted upon my mind in the same way as did the one that sat upon the back of my hand and crawled up my arm) and all the cats for so graciously allowing me to come into your homes to meet and photograph the critters.

It was grand to finally meet some Cat of the Day folks in real life.

It was a bit odd, and striking, too, to see so a bright sun and feel such dramatically warm temperatures this time of year. It was odd, too, to stroll down the beach in front of the cliffs and to come suddenly upon a naked man, dangling his way down the beach, then to keep walking and find that he was just the first of many.

All the naked people walking on the beach were men. Not one woman. What's with that? What's the point?

A woman could have looked quite exquisite and wonderful - COULDN'T THERE HAVE BEEN JUST ONE? (perhaps one who would have smiled, maybe even winked, as she sauntered by? Oh! then I would have had something to think about!) - but these men just looked odd and strange - silly, even. Makes me wonder what women see in us in the first place when, truly, it is they who are the works of art.

It was also something to one day be sitting under an umbrella in front of Rubio's, eating a three-cheese quesidilla smothered in jalepenas and quacomole, the temperature in the 80's, and then, four air-legs to the north later to be sitting in a log cabin along the frozen Chandalar River, just south of the Brooks Range and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, where the high noon sun was just a dim, orange orb cruising the southern horizon, the temperature - 15 F, eating fresh, boiled, beaver while everyone complained about the warm weather and wondering what the hell is going on and wondering when is the river going to be good enough to snowmachine one and when is Alaska going to be Alaska once again; talking about bear, moose, caribou muskrat, beaver, and lynx in a way that folks down south don't talk about them, talking about them that the way that people who actually live with them do, noting that in just over five months ducks will be flying back to the dinner plate and hell, it doesn't even look or feel like winter yet.

The black cat is on my left shoulder, purring, kneading, constantly shifting position, nuzzling my face with his cool nose one moment, knibbling my elbow the next, forcing me to enlarge his platform by extending my left arm, forcing me to type with just my right hand.

He is glad to have me back from both San Diego and the Chandalar and I am glad to be back with him.

We belong together, the black cat and I.

Now I will go into the house and join my youngest daughter as she blows out the candles that symbolize her 17 years outside the womb. The black cat will follow and will climb in and out of the boxes as she empties them of her gifts. So will the kitten, Pistol, and soon the two of them will be tumbling and rolling across the floor.

The other cats, being older and more staid, will likely not join in but give them time and they, too, will try out the boxes.

Hi Frostfrog, I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip to San Diego but what was Kohala thinking of sending you off to Blacks Beach. LOL
I have been here for fifty years and no most of us women do not go there, at least any women over 30 lol.
I hope you got to see our other wonders here, Balboa Park, Point Loma Lighthouse, La Jolla Caves, San Diego World Class Zoo and I could go on and on. The most important wonder that you missed was two cranky, independent, kid hating, dog hating, curious, sweet, loving, brave Mini Schnauzers named Miss Daisy and Perry, the terrier terrors.
Ah yes we go to Rubios quite often for the lobster tacos, they are delicious and cannot be duplicated. I'm glad San Diego left a good impression with you, just wish it was not Black's Beach. lol

Boy have I missed your posts FF!! You have such a great writing style. I just close my eyes and remember your words and I feel like I'm sitting in the cabin myself. I'll bet black cat is happy you're back.

It is nice to hear from you again Frostfrog, I thought Kohala mentioned something about you heading south to visit.
I am surprised they didn't take you to eat at Taco Bell and rather than take you to the zoo to see the animals (like the cute Koalas) they took you to a nude beach!
I am sure other Pet Talkers could think of better places to take you when you travel to their parts.
    RIP sweet Samantha

Black's Beach, huh? I did not know. I just drove up the road until I came to a place where there was good parking and a sign that identified the place as a state park and also there were some good cliffs rising over the beach, appearing to go on for a few miles, so I figured that if I walked below them the crowds would be less than elsewhere.

I did get a very good picture. Two guys were walking straight at me and I thought to myself "well, this is a public beach and I can photograph anything I see so lets so what will happen if photograph these two guys." So, I dropped suddenly to one knee and aimed a telephoto lens at them. Well, these two, unashamed, proud-to-be-naked-in-public guys were suddenly clasping hands over strategic places, turning this way and that, dodging for cover. They looked like Marines and were bigger than me (yes, there too, although, being by the sea, they were suffering from "shrinkage," as coined by George of Seinfeld fame), besides outnumbering me, so I was a little worried about what they might do, but then a big part of their job is defending my first amendment rights, so I figured they would understand.

The resultant photo is hilarious. (Besides photographing cats wherever I go, I keep a photo journal, which is where that photo has gone).

Yes, it is too bad I missed those terriers. Dogs being so plentiful and abundant everywhere one goes, I don't have a similar project going where I seek them out as I do cats. However, I do try to photograph "car dogs" whenever I can, so you should have come driving by me, terror terriers prominently displayed in the window and I would surely have photographed them.

As for Taco Bell, there is one on Rosecrans not far from Sandy Frost's house. I ate there twice and it was quite good, except that they ran out of forks but the guy was nice enough to go next door to KFC and get one for me.

Most of my time in San Diego was spent working and I did not get to see all that I had hoped, but I did visit my niece who I had not seen since we buried her father (my brother) in June of 1987 and I got to meet her husband and young daughter, so that was good.

I'm laughing, I did see that Seinfeld episode too and I can imagine those two marines? on the beach, I'm sure they went back to their barracks with quite a story, One of those "you will never believe this" kind.
I don't think they have Rubios in the East, I believe this man went to Mazatlan and tried these fish tacos and brought the recipe back to California and now has a huge chain of Rubios. Taco Bell does not compare to Rubios.
Kohala is a very nice person, she was very comforting when both of our Schnauzers were attacked by a neighbors dog. We did have a cat at one time a Calico, we found her on Christmas eve under our air conditioner and immediately adopted her. She was a sweet, beautiful cat and her name was Baby. After she was gone we then got our Schnauzers. I do believe you are right we should put a sign in our window "terror terriers" in our Explorer, they sit very quietly until someone goes by and then they leap to the window and scare them out of their wits. Believe me you would know them if you walked or drove by. LOL

    Great Visit!!

First - a disclaimer - as Frostfrog mentioned, he went adventuring and found Black's Beach all on his own!! I haven't been there in decades, after my first and only visit there with some adventurous acquaintances!! Not my style, I'm afraid!!!

My visist with the delightful Frsotfrog was sadly short, as I was buried under work and getting ready to fly to the East Coast for a class. Sigh - but our time was delightful - he is a fascinating person!!! More later, I just got home and poor Grasshopper and Dadcat are wondering about me as I came straight here, after checking for my PetTalk Christmas Card!!

Frostfrog, it was wonderful meeting you - enjoy the peace and quiet fo Alaska - I know I would!!!!!! But we talked about that!!! BTW - I'm ordering the book Monday.

How cool, a meeting between PTers. How nice to open your heart to a stranger (I assume), and share your town. Was this just a chance meeting? Business? I would like to know more details, please!! Aren't I so nosy?

I think we should probably identify which mall it is that you want to go to...I think they have like 5 of them!! I believe you mean Circle Centre in downtown since that's where Nordstrom's is! lol

C'mon FF...maybe you can find a new inspiration for another book!!

Okay, Cataholic (and the rest of you) - a few details:

You probably know by now that I am a professional photographer (and writer) and I do a lot of traveling. Most of that is in Alaska, but sometimes I go Outside, too (5 Outside trips in 2002 - four to the Lower 48 and one to Northeast Canada). Back when my daughters were small, I began photographing cats that I would meet along the way. I would learn what I could about those cats and then when I came home, I would scan the images into my computer (this was before most people even knew about digital imaging) and then I would call my daughters in, pull up the pictures and tell them whatever stories I had learned about the cats. They were always very eager to see what kind of cats I had met.

My youngest just turned 17, but I still do this and they still appreciate it. Someday, I plan to compile a selection of these photos into a book or two along with the stories told to my daughters.

Through Cat of the Day and Pet Talk, both Kohala and Sandy had become e-pals, so when I found out I was going to San Diego, I asked for permission to come by and photograph the cats (and Darwin, the frog), offered to provide evidence that I was not just another cyber-psycho and thus was granted the privilege.

As to the Midwest - my youngest daughter is a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and of the city of Chicago itself (these two facts account for the name of our calico) and I have promised her a trip to the Windy City to take in a Cubs game. We had intended to do it this past summer, but my schedule was ruthless and the trip had to be postponed.

But a promise is a promise and I still must take her down there before she goes off to college somewhere (this is her junior year in high school).

Now... as to that shopping center part... I'd rather face an angry and hungry polar bear unarmed. The only places in shopping centers that I even care to go are the food courts, and any stores that might have little airplanes or small, ceramic cats.

I have excellent relationships with my wife and daughters, but whenever they drag me into a shopping mall I am a miserable man, indeed.

Thanks again, Sandy and Kohala (and for the book part, too).

And to the rest of you - it would be fun to meet you and your cats (okay - dogs and other critters, too) down the road.

BTw - the blac cat us heremaking it difficult to type. What a buddy he is!
