Emily is REALLY sick, she is gone

    Hi Everyone,

Well my namesake (Emily) is REALLY sick with a URI. We went to the vet on Friday and I had them give her an antibiotic injection and I got some pills to give her at home. But I also found out that she had lost 1.5 lbs (she was only 6.1 lbs to begin with). I have been force feeding her Max Cal mixed with a little water and the antibiotic pills. She has now had 3 pills and the injection and seems to be getting worse. When I fed her this morning she was walking with a wobble and she is not fighting me at all. Emily usually hates to be wrapped in a towel, but now she isn't even complaining.

She is in the master bedroom and I just ran a hot shower to steam up the room (and hopefully help her breathing). I also have a humdifier in there for her. Does anyone else have any other suggestions??? I am really worried about her

Can you take her back to the vet? Sounds like she needs to be admitted for inpatient care at this point.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but rather by the moments that take our breath away.

    Thank You, Michelle!!!

Unfortunately my vet is closed on Sunday and the only emergency vets in this area will not keep her over night because they close when the other vet offices are open.

I agree, a vet visit is imperative.

I live very close to an emergency veterinary service that is open 24x7 every day of the year but when I asked them to keep a kitten with a severe URI they said he was still better off at home and they refused to take such infectious cats unless their lives were in immediate danger. So, your vets may refuse. My regular vet keeps infectious cats in their restroom (heated and large) to protect their other sick clients. From what I have been told over and over as I've dealt with URI's in many cats, there is nothing they would do beyond what you are doing now. She's actually better off in your home, frightening as it is for you, and I do empathise with you.

Did the vet take blood to find out why Emily has lost weight? My thought is that Emily has an underlying illness, such as early renal failure or hyperthyroidism, that has caused the weight loss and made her more vulnerable to infections.

Keep doing what you are doing, especially the force feeding even though it's very distressing and scary when they are mouth breathing. I've always used AD, is what you are using from the vet?

Well right now she is staying at the emergency vet's office for the night. Their recommendation was that I let her go to the RB. Unfortunately I couldn't do that without giving her a chance, so she is with them tonight. They will warm her up, re-hydrate her, and give her antibiotics. She does have early kidney failure, so when they did the blood work the levels came back very poorly.

Please say a prayer or two for her...

The best thoughts are coming Emily's way and yours too. What a terribly difficult time you are going through right now. Hopefully you'll find some comfort from your friends here.

HUGS and PT Prayers for poor Emily!

Rehydration has worked miracles before on cats...and with EARLY renal trouble, I hope it will do the trick!

She can't be that old...I hope her usual good health will stand her in good stead.

Emily, come back and stay with your Meowmie...come back to love and health.
Creator, power of life, God, all that is right and whole, please embrace and heal one of your beautiful creatures, Emily.

i am soooo sorry for your poor baby being so sick.Do you think she'll be ok for an operation?Usually that's what they do when the URI is this bad...and usually as fast as possible.I'm saying when nothing else works.
Prayers are on the way for dear emily.
