Neglected German Shepherd Dog =/ *Update* Good News!

Ok, so heres the deal. My moms friend has a 4-6 year old Female German Shepherd. This dog is pretty much neglected. The only attention she gets is when she is fed. When they go out of town they have me come over and feed her so I am pretty familiar with the dog. Her name is Xena.

I feel so bad for this dog. So I came up with a plan. The next time my mom talks to her friend, she is going to ask if I can walk Xena everyday when I walk Travis.

I have my work cut out for me. Most likely, she is not used to a leash. So I have to introduce her to a leash. She also isn't used to other dogs, so I have to introduce her to Travis. But first and most important of all, I need to gain her trust.

I need some prayers/good thoughts that her owner will agree to let me walk her. Once her owner says yes, I can start going over there and getting her used to me and slowly gaining her trust. Once her trust has been gained, I can introduce her to the leash and Travis. Everything will be taken one step at a time and very slowly. I don't want to overwhelm her. I'm really hoping this all will work out. I'm confident in my ability to work her through this. It will be nice for Travis to have a playmate his size. And I'm sure that Xena will appreciate finally having some attention.

Another possible experience for me, I may be helping my brothers friends mom train their dog. (He's either a Lab or a Golden, I can't remember) She's been having some trouble training him and has asked my mom if I would help her train him. (Apparently my mom has told her that I work well with animals LoL).

So two new possible training experiences for me.

I hope all goes well, especially with Xena. She deserves it. =/

I'm not looking for advice, just some good thoughts and prayers.

It's really nice of you to offer to give Xena a chance to be loved and get some attention. Poor girl probably won't get any except when you walk her I'm sure you will give her all the love she needs though

Good luck and you and Xena will be in my prayers.

Good luck with training the golden as well!

Thank you. I really appreciate the thoughts/prayers. This means a lot to me. Not only because she is a GSD, but because I hate the fact that they don't pay any attention to her. They've had her since she was a puppy and she lives outside 24/7. I can't even imagine doing that to a dog. I feel guilty leaving my dogs outside in their enormous yard for more than an hour. I couldnt leave a dog outside 24/7. Part of me is almost hoping she'll just say take the dog. That dog could do so much better in a different environment.

Ok! So my mom called and told her friend that I wanted to walk/work with her GSD. She agreed! So if it isn't raining when I get off work I will be going over there to see her. I'll take pics too if I can. I really hope it isn't raining. I can't wait to start working with her . I hope her and Travis get along. I'm so excited right now. I'm probably rambling.

Whew. Ok. So I'll keep you all updated on how things go with her.

Good luck! Especially with Xena. It must be very hard to see her live like that. Why do people get animals if they're not dedicated to them? I know Xena will love you for it.

I did the right thing by setting you free
But the pain is very deep.
If only I could turn back time, forever, you I'd keep.
    I miss you

I hear you whimper in your sleep
I gently pet you and say, no bad dreams
It will be alright, to my dog as dark as night.

I am like..overly excited about this. As if working with one GSD isnt enough fun, I now get to work with TWO! Ok..I need to calm down. Lol. I do hope she likes Travis and I. She will really have fun once she warms up to us. I'll let her romp around in the backyard with Travis occasionally too. She'll get to play with all sorts of toys. I'll have her spoiled rotten in no time.
I'm getting a head of myself here though. I first have to gain her trust.

    Good luck!

Please be careful with her though, if she has been a backyard dog her whole life, she may not be used to some situations, abd you wouldn't want to lose control of her.

Have lots of fun and keep us updated.

I will be taking things VERY slow with her I want this to be a good experience for her.

If I can go over today, I'll take some pictures. All without flash ofcourse. Dont want the poor girl to get overwhelmed.

I'm packing my treat bag with some nice goodies in it. Hopefully our "first" (as it isnt really our first but it is our first in a long time) meeting goes well.

That is great that she agreed to let you work with Xena. I can't wait to hear the progress you make with her. Oh, and pictures would be a huge bonus!!
Our goal in life should be - to be as good a person as our dog thinks we are.

Thank you for the siggy, Michelle!
