We've had to dial the area code for local numbers for the past 10 years. I can hardly remember not having to.
Just the phone number.

Just the number on land lines - cell phones work with or without the area code for local numbers.
Portland Oregon metro area - its all ten digits. New numbers get a new area code - its kind of cute, you can always tell older business signs because they only show 7 numbers instead of 10.
These are not the droids you were looking for
Area code+ phone number : 10 digits!
I miss you enormously Sydney, Maya, Inka & ZazouBe happy there at the Rainbow Bridge
Land line: just the 7 digit number.
My cell phone: area code and number (I don't need to dial "1"), though.

Recentally it changed to area code also. Which is a real pain because I always forget. I look up a phone # in the phone book, dial the number and close the phone book. But wait ! I forget the area code, so I've gotta look up the # all over again.
If you want to call into town, you have to dial 1 first.

Oh yes, we have been doing this for quite a while now!! There are just SOOOOOOO many telephones in my area (land lines/cell phones/2nd lines in the same home....etc) that we needed MORE numbers. So a second area code now overlaps our original one. 610 and 484 telephone numbers for my area. So 610-123-4567 could live right next door to 484-123-4567. (LOL)Originally Posted by cali

Here, you don't have to dail the area code unless you're dailing outside of a cirtian area...as some numbers are concidered "long distance" even though they have the same area code.
If it's local, no area code is required. Like DJFyrewolf said, some places within the same area code are considered long distance though so it is required then.
