Paws crossed for Max please !

Oh, I am just so worried about my big boy today and know you will all understand that my stomach is quite literally tied in a knot with worry. Last night he was a bit huffy and snappy with Tom and Candy. Nothing unusual there as he can be a very grumpy, highly strung and generally sensitive cat and have whole days where he’s in a strange mood. You know, will try to sit in the strangest and tiniest of spaces and generally stare wide-eyed into space. That’s just Max being Max. So this may explain the following…

We were woken at around 3am with him growling away for no apparent reason. My first thought was Tom was annoying him – he can’t be bothered with his silly little brother – but both Tom and Candy were sleeping in the other room. I got up, he didn’t seem to want cuddles or scritches, when he usually is a safe bet to purr away like a big noisy engine. I put out some fresh dinner to test his reaction to this and he munched away quite happily with no encouragement. He then settled down again until the morning when again was a bit moany-faced and not wanting a fuss, but wolfed down his breakfast – I hadn’t even got round to putting out fresh meat yet at this point.

I have seen him like this before, once when he must have been in a fight and suffered a bite to his leg – the pain must have caused him to react in this way. Another time was just under 3 years ago when he had a bladder blockage. He was really quite ill at the time and spent 6 days as a patient up at the vets before things had resolved for him to come home. Ever since then I have been so careful with his diet and what he is and isn’t allowed. I have also in the past seen him behave in this way, settle down to sleep and then be back to his old self. So of course, my mind is now racing that its got to be the second reason, and the pee-pee problem has recurred – I can’t tell who has done what during the night. max can go for HOURS without going anyway. He is mobile and walking normally, doesn’t seem tender in any spot particularly. I’m hoping maybe if he was feeling discomfort with this he wouldn’t be eating as normal?

Don’t know what to think really only that I pray the hours will soon pass and I can be home and see to my poor boy and take him to the vets. My dad is however going to check on him during the day and report to me – I’m watching the phone like mad willing it to ring.

I’ll report back once there is news of any kind but meantime due to complete absence of sleep and food (I think my throat has closed over!) I’m not a pretty sight, nor much use here today….. If anyone can spare a thought for my big handsome boy today, I’d be ever so grateful.
    xx

I seem to be well versed in this one right now. I'm going through the same thing with Pouncer. Can you roll him onto his back and then press gently on his whole belly, increasing pressure all around? If he screams in pain, you know he's blocked and full. MY vet assured me that you'd KNOW if you felt a full bladder. I kept feeling like a complete failure because I could never tell, but it turns out Pouncer was passing little itty bitty dribbles of pee all day long.

Is he in an out of the litter box all day long? If he is in the box, is he there for a long while? Is he obsessively licking his "privates"?

All those symptoms are sure fire clues that he's got crystals and/or he's blocked.

Pouncer and I send lots of good wishes to Max.

The answer to these is no, no, no. I know what you mean about being uncertain as to whether you are feeling a solid full bladder or not. While Max didn't appreciate being touched (in general) his undercarriage bits didn't seem unusually large and his 'swingy' flap seemed unaffected.

To be honest, what I'm really going on is his behaviour and vocalising, rather than any 'physical' signs. At the risk of repeating myself, Max can be a very strange boy sometimes and I sincerely hope its down to that. Update when I have it.

I should have a report from my dad soon - he's on his way to get the bathroom fitment we need and then will be at our house and report on the boy.
    Thanks for your concerns xx

Paws and fingers crossed for Max. My Smokey can be strange like that as well so I know what you mean by you don't know if it's that he is not feeling himself or if he is just being strange. Please keep us posted. ((hugs)) Meg

This seems to be turning into the year of "Kitty Worry" with most of us seemingly having a real worry with one of our sweet babies. Fingers and paws crossed that he is just "in a mood" and nothing is wrong.

So glad your little one was just "moody" and nothing terrible is wrong. I know how scary it can be when you think your furkids are sick!

I feel for you, even a little moodiness is worrisome once your cat had bladder problems.
The way you describe him wolfing down his food and being snappy with his siblings made me think that he was involved in some territorial fighting, and that he might had spotted his enemy.

his undercarriage bits didn't seem unusually large and his 'swingy' flap seemed unaffected.

LOL, is that what you call it in Scotland?

Thanks to BCBlondie for this great signature!
