It's a time to spoil, spoil, spoil

It's a chance to spoil spoil spoil as much as possible and take every opportunity to let Cleo know how loved she is.
This is what I told TopCat3 in her post about Cleo in Cat Health, and it looks like it's my turn to take my own advice.

I took Peanut today for a checkup after her surgery. The vet had told me to bring her back after 3 months to do another ultra sound to see if the tumor was growing back. So he did the ultra sound and also tested her urine. The ultra sound showed that the bladder wall is thickening, but there is no visible tumor. The urine test showed blood in the urine, and abnormal cells and a bunch of other stuff I don't remember, but none of it good. He said what this all indicates is that there is probably "a malignancy there somewhere" and he thought it might have been a little further down the urethra(?) than he could get during the surgery.

He said he really doesn't recommend chemo. Chemo has been known to show up well in the urine, but isn't particularly effective against the bladder cancer, and can render her incontinent. There is some other medication - Medcam? - that he said is approved in Canada for cats, but not approved in the US, so for now cats in the US get the dog version, and it is highly dangerous to the kidneys. He said he himself has had to treat 4 otherwise healthy cats for kidney failure after being on this medication, so he didn't recommend that either, especially since the results are still sketchy. He said with this med, cats lived from - say 3 - 19 months longer after the surgery, where unmedicated cats lived - say - 2 - 14 months after the surgery. So again, the result wasn't worth the risk. Especially since he said her urine is a little diluted, which means her kidney function is already starting to wane.

So, basically, there is nothing more to do for her except keep her comfortable. For now, she seems fine to me. She is her goofy little self, and like I've mentioned before, she seems even more goofy and spunky than she has in a long time. Her appetite is tremendous and it doesn't seem like she's straining or in pain when she urinates. So she is doing good now, and hopefully she will continue doing good for quite some time....but there is no saying how long this will last.

So all smoochies, skritchies, hugs, extra treats, snuggles, squishies and whatever else you want to throw at her will be delivered ten-fold, over and over and over again.....until she tells me it's time.

Oh no, not Peanut! It just breaks my heart to hear this. They are with us for way too short and all we can do is love them to pieces with the time we have with them. Give the dear girl some kisses and squishies from me and the M's.

Oh Debbie I'm just seeing this. How I hate reading it. Please give precious Peanut hugs/kisses from me. I will watch for updates.
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a full management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors in cities, towns, and rural areas are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, and sterilized by veterinarians. Kittens and tame cats are adopted into good homes. Healthy adult cats too wild to be adopted are returned to their familiar habitat under the lifelong care of volunteers

    Thank you all so much!

After the vet appt. Saturday morning, we had to immediately head out to pick up the motorhome. It was really the weekend from hell because first of all I get this not so good report, then we continued to have problems with the motorhome and we didn't get home until after 8:00 pm last night. All the while Terry's fuming and racking his brain over the motorhome problems, all I can think about is Peanut and somehow I had convinced myself that she is a lot worse off than I remembered. By the time we were getting close to home, I was desperate to get back to her and tell it it'll be ok. So we pull in and there she is at the door waiting for us. She proceeded to go tearing into the bedroom to jump into her box and start rolling around and acting goofy. We had things to carry in so I was playing with her for a minute or two and smooching on her then I had to head back out to get another load to carry in. She goes tearing past me as I'm walking away and excitedly goes to her little rug in the kitchen which she sits on when it's treat time. Normally she sits quiet and polite while we dig the treats out, but this time she was meowing and practically leaping out of her skin to get at the treats! I just about burst out crying at her playfulness and excitedness to see us. Here I had convinced myself she was on her death bed, and here she was letting me know she's no where near ready to go yet. What a wonderful welcome home.
