HELP!!!!! she goes outside, but won't go potty

My 2 year old beagle/bassett hound mix was adopted by me about 2 weeks ago from a local shelter with no info on her. She is not house trained, hence the following question. When I take her outside to go potty, we're outside for close to half an hour each time. All she does is sniff and sniff and no potty. I know she's a hunting breed and I give her plenty of time. Yet, as soon as we come inside the house, within 2 minutes she relieves herself on the carpet. Why is she doing this and what can I do about it?

Somebody posted something like this on the forum recently. There was a suggestion about buying this pee-post at the pet store. I was like, "pee-post? What the heck is that?" Two days later I got a pet catalog and sure enough, there was a pee-post for sale. It has some kind of pheromone scent that makes dogs pee. It's a post you stick into the ground. How about you try that? Maybe it'll work. Good luck.

That pee-post sounds alright. We are going through the same thing with Possum at the moment, but being just a pup she should be a lot easier to train.

I've never heard of the "Pee-post" but it sounds like a great invention! But I'm old-school (because I'm old! LOL!) and my questions/suggestions are old school. First, have you cleaned your carpets completely? I mean by using a pet strength carpet deodorizer. You can buy some good ones at Petco or probably any pet store...I don't know how well the supermarket mass market brands actually work. Dogs noses are so much better than ours. She will go where she smells previous pee so the smell must be completely obliverated.
Also, I know you said you take her out for a long time. Do you talk to her while she is out? If you do, don't. No playing when it's pee time!! Let her out, ignore her until she pees and then reward her. If she doesn't, give her 5 or 10 minutes, bring her back inside. Once she tries to go again, bring her right back outside. No talking or playing!!! Repeat a phrase. I use "Hurry up" When I say that, Duncan goes almost immediately (after 4 years of doing it though)
If she still doesn't go, repeat. Eventually she will associate the words with being outside and peeing. (Make sure you say it while she is actually DOING it) Dogs learn fairly quick and I'm sure she will pick it up. Good Luck.

Are you in her sight the whole time you are outside, or can she
go somewhere you can't see her? Does she go potty in the house in front of you or does she sneek into another room? If you are and she does then could be she was being smacked for going potty in the previous owners house and now is afraid to go when you are watching. She may think she was hit for what she was doing, not where.

I had a beagle 13 years ago and he was fully housetrained until I had a baby. Unfortunately, I was so wrapped up in my son's life and wore out otherwise that my dog was getting ignored. To get attention (even negative attention) he started using the house as a potty. Took alot of patience and time before he forgave me.

I would say 30 minutes is way to long to be outside to go potty. Since you just got her you have to train her to go potty outside. To do this I would suggest taking her out when you know she has to go, say first thing in the morning and while she is going potty say "good" and give her a treat. When she is finished have a party like her going outside was the best thing ever. Everytime you go outside take some treats with you when she goes give her a treat and have a party. Be sure to encourge her to "go potty" while you are outside, she won't know what this means at first but eventually will figure it out. After she goes and you are having your party, be sure to say good potty so she figures out that is what you wanted. If after 5 minutes she doesn't go bring her inside. If she goes inside say "opps" and rush her outside and tell her to go potty. If she goes throw a party but no treat. Oh, one more important thing, after she goes potty let her sniff around for 30 seconds to a minute before heading back inside. This way she won't think that as soon as we go potty we go inside and so she won't be tempted to sniff the ground before she does her business because she knows she will get to afterwards.
