how do you know if a cat is straining to poo? my cat makes a funny face when she goes...
Hello Ashleycat:
As for straining, I would say that if the poop is formed then there is nothing to worry about. My cat Max makes a face too.
My other cat Speckles will scoot as well and yes, those nasty brown streaks on the carpet are annoying. Specks is 17 and a bit **ahem** fluffy so she has a problem cleaning back there. I help her when I can but I work all day so sometimes I come home to a surprise. I don't know what to suggest to stop the scooting. First, make sure she doesn't not have worms or anything similar that irritates the bum.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand and strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming WOO HOO - What a Ride!

Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened.
I agree with everything slick said. Kuhio started scooting for a while when she was about 16 years old. The vet said her anal glands were impacted and had to clean them out. Poor Kuhio couldn't sit down for a few hours, but she didn't scoot again.
Ask your vet about microchipping. ~ It could have saved Kuhio's life.
