    Today I officially became...

a volunteer of the Grosse Isle Animal Shelter!!!

My friend Kathy and I rescued this 10 month old black female cat who had been living on the street. We told a little white lie though. Because the Grosse Isle only accepts strays from their little "island" we said that she was found wandering around the real estate agency that Kathy works for. The ACO named her after the princess in Shrek 2 (sorry, can't remember the name). At least now she has a roof over her head and food in her belly. She was such a loving little girl!!!

My friend Kathy and I volunteered together! This place is awesome! The cat room has cages, but the cats are allowed free reign. They also have rooms that are brightly painted and have screen doors on them. There were four 8 week old kittens, and four 6 week old kittens, along with older cats. I plan to take my camera with me on my next visit.

There is a 10 year old female, Paleface (I really don't like that name) who was surrendered because her owner, who had Alzheimer's, went into the hospital. There is also a blue-eyed white cat who is deaf. She's skittish but learning.

I will be working with feral cats and kittens, trying to socialize them. The woman who is in charge of the feral cats asked me if I'd like to try and trap a feral female. The only hitch is I'll have to get up at 4 a.m., before the old man who feeds them, gets up. This guy doesn't understand that they need to not be fed in order to get them to go into the trap. I will also be fostering and socializing any feral kittens that come in.

I'm so happy that I've got a place to do what I do best!!!

    WoW!

that's great! Hope you like it and it doesn't get taxing! 4am! What time does he normally feed? It may be easier for you if you just let him go ahead and feed and then try to trap her with something like catnip or tastier food than canned cat food. Well, whatever you do, good luck! Make sure she isn't nursing before you trap her (as you know!) Doesn't sound like the shelter has many cats and since they take only their own, me and jan will have to come over and plant some colonies of strays from here, eh???? lying comes with rescue work, a lot of shelters are like that even when they have room!! (for heaven's sake- and other shelter's are overwhelmed, it's not fair- you could really help jan out here! We could meet in pennsylvania...?)
anyway, yay for you! keep me posted on how things go! It can be such rewarding work!

Good to hear you are back to doing what you enjoy, and this place sounds like you will be appreciated by the staff. It goes without saying that the furkids will be forever beholden to the loving care and concern you have to offer them.
