I never thought of this :(

From time to time I go to Petfinder and look at the shelter where I got Ripley. I don't know why. It just makes me sad but I do it anyway. It is a kill shelter. There was a remark under one of the dogs that this dog only has a short time because it was a "turn in." It said that when the shelter is full, as it is now, the available room must be given to the strays because they must be held 7 days for claiming before they are PTS. That means a "turn in" has a very short time to find another home. How in the world can someone turn in a dog knowing that their pet will be one of the first to "go" in this situation? Then again, owners who turn in their dogs always puzzle me anyway. I imagine this is the way it is everywhere. Does anyone know?

Pam, usually an owner turn in at a kill shelter means that they will be held a short short time. There are a few who will only hold for one day. It just breaks my heart. They have no chance at all.

    Pam,

I think the time might vary from city to city, but I know that
"owner turn in's" are the first to be pts. By law most city shelters
must keep an animal for a certain number of days for owners to
    show up and claim them.

It's not fair at all. I'm convinced the people who turn in a
family pet don't think two minutes about what will happen to
the animal. If they think at all, it's to convince themselves that
someone else might adopt the hopelessly confused & scared pet.

Thankfully, most of the shleters here in Toledo are not like that. We have an excellent humane soceity that will chaning from a limited intake facility to an open door. The rarely put animals down and they also have an agreement with the Dog warden to take as many adopatble animals as they possibly can. We also have several active rescue groups in the area.

Some of the rest of Ohio, is not so lucky. In fact, wehave some of the most horrible shleters anywhere, where dogs receive no et care, no sperarion from other aniamls, and are euthenized by gas chamber or guns We have an active group, the Ohio Humane Organizattion, that is working to change the laws, and have had some succes in some counties, but stillhav ea way to go.

Our Spot was an owner surrender, and was only given one month. He was in SE Ohio, and they put down more Pit Bulls and Dalmamtians then any other breed. We were so lucky he was given that one extra day!
