Comming Back

I can't seem to get my dog to come back when he's called, even though he knows the command. He just Ignores me and runs away! If you have any ideas on how to get him to come back please tell me!
PS Sam is two years old, and we have had him for two years. He is a mixed breed dog, supposedly a beagle cross but he is the size of a lab lol. He has had obedience training, and he listens to the commands sit, stay (mostly), down, shake a paw and high five.

Have you previuosly trained your dog for this and now he is ignoring it? I am going to assume he has been taught before and needs re-enforcement.

I would start by puttin ghim on a long line ( about 20-30 ft. Let him get interesting in somthing and say his name, come. If he doesn't immmediatley turn and come to you, start reeling him in. do not repeat the command, just make him to it. Then reinforce ( give treats, tell him good dog, etc, etc) Do this a few times and hopefully you will nothave to reel him in. up the criteria...oinly give him treats if he comes on his own....Start not giveing treats every time, but always praise him. In crease the distractiona dn the length. He should get better at it!

Oh I just read a wonderful way to get your dog to come. It takes time but I think it's well worth it. I'll be trying this with Kai soon.

What you do is...
First, practice the come for a week or so. Everyday, 4 times a day, 15 reps each time. After that, your dog should be pretty good at it. Then this is where they learn that if they don't come, there are consequences. Try to find another person to help you also...try to find another dog. The other person, lets call her Mary for clarity's sake. Ok so mary holds your dog. You step back, maybe 15-20 feet..whatever's comfortable for you and you think your dog will work with. So have the other dog sitting and staying somewhere else..away from all of you but make sure the other dog can see your dog. Ok so you say "COME!" make a big hand gesture also. If your dog comes, reward like CRAZY..coming to you is always good! If your dog doesn't come, go to the other dog, and give it the treat. Make sure your dog sees. Soon, your dog will see that if it doesn't come, someone else will get your attention. Hope all goes well!

We need more information. How old is he? What kind of dog? How long have you owned him? Has he ever gone through obedience training? Is he obediant in other things?

Karen's right we do need more info as to the situation when you are calling your dog. Like when do you use the recall command, is it only used for positive things are both positive and negative things. What tone of voice do you use when you call the dog. Has the dog had a negative experience with the word that you use for the recall that kind of stuff.

Mickey used to be like that. Now, after only a few eeks, I'm comfortable with letting him out without a leash and on his own. (with someone with him of course)

All we did was act a bit stricter when we told him to come. Before we'd be more laid-back, it's like he felt like he had the choice whether to come or not. Now, we say it in a stronger tone and he knows he HAS to come. Maybe you can work on your tone...?

Hmm, I would suggest using Treats to get him to Come to you. Hold the treat up where he can see it, And if you can get him to atleast look at you Call for him and show him the treat, When he Comes, Reward him.
