ok..he needs hairball and deworming treatment

I just got back from the vets and they gave me a syringe of dewormer Rock will not have anything to do with it...How do I do this without getting bit or scratched?:lol
the hairball stuff they said to just put in his food but he hasn't had it yet.....please I need some ideas..I tried to give him the worm stuff but he ran out of my arms like you wouldn't believe:eek
does he remember the smell of the vets office and it smelled like it??ok..well, I just don't know how to do this and you all are the pros here

Incase I didn't tell yall, Rock has been vomitting some each time he eats, not every time but enough to worry about so I had to talk to the vet...he acts like he feels fine and all but I am just a little paranoid....that's me though..thanks in advance for any suggestions

In my house, we have one person hold the cat, and one give the medicine. We fostered a cat once where my fiancee gave the medicine, and I held Fluffy while in gloves and a leather jacket.

I have heard of people taking a cat and wrapping it in a blanket or like stuff. Wrap it so only its head is exposed. Good luck.

We use the " Meezer-up-the-sleeve" method.... Take one old sweatshirt and you can cut the sleeve off (we just use the whole shirt) and put kitty through said sleeve so that only their head sticks out....You might still want 2 people for this....but the sleeve cuts done on the amount of wiggling and "Claws-of-Destruction" while they are in the "Kitty Burrito".....Just a suggestion.

Actually, the " Meezer-up-the-sleeve" method sounds pretty good, I may give that a try next time.

I agree - two people if at all possible will make it easier - just make sure both are wearing long sleeves!

yep. when alone i use the burrito approach too.
wrap him up in an old towel with just his head showing.

But you never know if the old "take 'em by surprise" ploy will work. My cats always get so defensive (and it turns out to be an awful experience for both of us) when I try the strong-arm techniques, sometimes it's easier to get them as they're sleeping and sneak it in the mouth before they know what's going on - especially for the occasional treatments. When it is an everyday deal, I agree that two people is easier.

It always sounds worse than it is. For my Bear, it was the ONLY way to get anything in him.

Get as much neck skin as you can and hold tight (it can actually help you to open his mouth, too) then administer with the other hand. It still helps to have 2 people, even with this.

ok..last night was when we gave it to him and I didn't get but one nick of blood on my arm

anyway, I held him as dh gave the medicine to him..I held his neck and grabbed as much skin as I could and he didn't flinch whatsover...took it like a pro....but as soon as I let go of his neck his back claw dug in deep.....ouch but he is all fixed up now...Thanks for all of these ideas everyone!! I appreciate it and helped me out alot!

Congratulations on getting the medicine into Rocky with a minimum of trauma (for both of you). I guess I won't complain about Emily, but I usually just mix the medicine in with her wet food and it is gone almost immediately. When the vet gives me pills I crush them up with a mortor and pestle (I used to be a pharmacist so I actually have this in my home) and mix it in with a strongly flavoured food like tuna.

Scruffing, if done properly, is a first rate way of controlling a cat. It causes them to go limp. I have used it for administering meds, transporting (use other hand under body), etc. My vet did a demonstration on Bosun when he wormed her. He had her on her hind legs and she took the strongid like a trooper just so she could get all 4 feet on the ground!

Well, Tex is the only one I pill regularly (2x day), and he is like a gift from above, thankfully.

But, for some of my more rascally ones, this works, for me. First, put on jeans. I get the meds- be they pills, liquid, whatever, and have it all ready to go, ALONG with a treat. I then get on my knees, and put the cat between my legs, my feet serve as a fence to the rear. I am then physically over the cat, and they can scooch as much as they want, but, they aren't getting anywhere (have YOU seen my thighs?), and open the hatch! Then, I immediately treat them with the yummy treat. This, for me, works better because, 1) I live alone; 2) too much hooman is scary- they know something is up with more people;3) I stay calm which helps them stay calm; 4) they are on the floor, not the counter, table, etc.
