    Unbelieveable

This would be funny if it wasn't so sad. How can they do this and
still hope people believe they are honorable men? Where's the justice?

It really all depends on whether the compensation is contractual and what the terms are.

If they have clauses in their contracts that they get bonuses if the OSHA reportable incidents are down X% then they get Z bonus, and that mark is made, then they get their bonus.

Poorly written story, especially for the BBC. There's a lot of missing information.

Re the eleven workers who died: how much $$ did their families get?

No one is forcing these executives to accept the money even if it is written into their contracts. Seems that a show of good faith would be to decline their bonuses.

What really gets me is...people whine around about "not wanting the government in their healthcare business."

I guess they would rather have these kinds of greedy jamocks deciding whose claims get paid and whose doesn't - always with an eye to the bottom line - also known as their personal pockets.

I have seen many executive incentive plans - any company that does not include a clause that the plan is not a contract and subject to revocation at any time, etc. etc. is failing their stockholders. It just doesn't happen.

These guys decided to pay themselves very big bonuses for the fantastic safety year they had.

That is the way the system works.
