    Dog Blindness

i have a Dobie that is 5 weeks old now .. i got her when she was only 3 weeks 2 days old .. unfortunately the Breeder lied to me about her age. When we got her she could hardly stand on her hind legs .. we then found out she had cocidia, and hook worms really bad. She also is blind. We have her doing very well now, she is feeling great, running around playing and eating like a horse .. in just a short 2 weeks se has gained over 1 1/2 lbs. My only concern right now is that she can't and its got me worried. I did take her to an Opthamologist last week and he told me that her eyes were working perfect and that there was not a problem there .. i asked him if i should take her to a Neurologist and he said give it a couple weeks and she should be able to see (of course no guarantee) she seems like at times she can see and others i don't think she can. In his report he said that he felt it was nutritional and that with proper nutrition she should be able to see. I've seen sick dogs before, but they were still able to see. Maybe this is different this time, i've never raised a puppy this young, only new puppy we ever had was 6 weeks old when we got him. If anyone has ever heard of this, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

How dishonest and horrible that the breeder lied to you about the puppy's age. I am so sorry to hear about her health problems.... so sad. I don't have any medical advice for you, sorry. I just wanted to wish you luck with your puppy, and hope that she gets well. What is her name? Do you have any pictures?

That's an old wives' tale, Jess! Things with beta carotene in them are good for human eyes, but dogs are different physiologically. How awful the breeder lied, and let a pup go so soon, and she was so sick. When you have a chance, I'd report them to the authorities, keep all your vet records. Proper nutrition is key, let us know how it goes.

And do give her a snuggle for me, okay? Poor little thing!

i don't know about the carrots, but the Doctor already ruled out any vision problem .. i am mainly worrying about anything being wrong with her brain .. being away from her Mom at such an early age ..

I've reported the lady to everyone possible to hopefully have her shut down .. her name is all over this PC about doing things like this before .. this is not her first Rodeo .. shes an evil old lady as far as i'm concerned .. we have spent many nights and days hand feeding this puppy and its been hell, but having her now is like Heaven to all of us ..its actually been like raising a new baby all over again, but she is very loved here and we'll get her on the right track somehow, someway .. i just want her to see so badly .. she is truly a sweety .. just keep this baby in your prayers ..

Personally, I would't worry about it. Blind babies are just babies, and time will eventually sort out blind, low vision, or sighted. I found out Spunk, my blind punk, could see light & dark one day when I was coming up the stairs so that the lighting made my shadow was huge, and she backed away in fear. Just love her and enrich her environment as much as you can, and let the rest take care of itself.
