Plastic update: he also ate THIS! p.3

Sherman ate the handle off a plastic measuring cup (that should have been inside the food bin, my bad). I found the chewed up cup part, but I'm worried that he may have a 2" hunk in him. He must have eaten it while I was out to dinner. No sure if I should try to make him hurl it up or not. Or if that would cause more damage? I'll go call the after-hours vet and hope he gets back to me soon.

Is he a very destructive chewer? as in would he have chewed it up tiny? or is he more of a few chews and gulp kinda guy?
It makes a difference only in that if he chews like Rusty its likely to be tiny and will pass soon on its own, if he isn't then you may have more to worry about.

Also I am sure you have already done this but have you looked for the remains of the handle EVERYWHERE?? (hoping that maybe he has it hid for later chewing pleasure kinda like bubble gum )

I really hope all is well please let us know how he and you are doing, and what the vet reccomends!

I reached his vet. He told me to give him LOTS and LOTS of fiber tonight, but not to overfeed. (??Didn't really say how much to feed him.)
I mashed a banana into a cup of high-fiber cereal and fed him some. I'll give it to him again in 15 minutes or so. His vet said that usually dogs pass things like this with no problem. I just have to keep an eye on him & his stool for signs of trouble, and be ready to take him in if he gets distressed.

I just talked to his vet last week, and we've been working on changing how I feed Sherman because he's gotten into the habit of inhaling his food. So now I only feed him a small portion, but several times a day. I think he was just plain hungry. I also just found a chewed up empty bag of Yummie Chummies under the table. It was half full earlier tonight. This is the first time he's ever chewed anything up like this & ate it.

Yummy Chummies are irresistable. Even my cats will rip a bag of them open given a chance!

My dogs have chewed up a fairly amazing number of things(including the windshield wipers right off Stuart's car!). None of them have got a blockage from the chewed up stuff, although it does make for some interesting poop scooping!

For his eating habits- check into that bowl called " Break-fast".. Its a bowl that has like cones in the bottom that forces the dog to take their time to get the food out verses gulping. I have several people that got this bowl, and the results have been great. http://www.brake-fast.net/

Oh Sherman, how could that possibly taste good? It sounds like you have gotten some good advice and are following through. Here's hoping that there will be a smoothe passage for that piece of plastic. When Bella was a puppy she ate part of a wooden clothespin that my hubby was using to keep a bag of potato chips closed. I spent quite some time scrutinizing doggie poops after that (my neighbors probably thought I was a little funny in the head as I would take a stick and sort of disect it.....TMI LOL!). At least with snow on the ground it should make your hunt a little easier. Hope Sherman will do just fine.

It was COLD outside when I had to do the Two-Dawg "poop check" for chickin bonez

After freezing my butt off *finding* (with a flashlight) and *sticking* mid-night poohs ...
I discovered the "magic of the baggie"!
* Turn a baggie inside out
* Use it like a poop-scoop bag - your hand INside the baggie
* RE-Turn the baggie outside in - (poop IN, hand out) - **Zip** the baggie!!
* retire to the warmth of the garage
* gently *kneed* the bagged stuff ... looking & feeling for the sought-after "prize"

No MUSS, No Phuss, No STINK, easy disposal!

This morning there are some much larger pieces - like 3/4" long and curved - I'm hoping this is the plastic with the loop end of the cup. Sherman also threw up some clear liquid this morning - he's never done that before. I would think that with 3 days of non-stop high fiber, (with plenty of results ), if he had a blockage, nothing would have gotten through. If he throws up again, I'll check with the vet.

Nobody needs to respond, I'm posting to make myself feel less worried. It's probably nothing.

It's a little late to suggest this ... but have you "saved" the pieces of plastic?
You could get an idea of how much of the missing cup has been "accounted for" -
and how much could still be "undergoing procesing" inside Sherman.

As long as the "production line" is still pushing out "product" ... it's a good sign!

I know exactly what you mean Pat. I had the same concerns when Maggie
ate a plastic fork. I think I continued to check "output" for a
month afterwards. I was amazed at the size of some of it, but like Phred
said, as long as he keeps pooping stuff, it's a good sign. Hugs to you both.

p.s. No he doesn't look at all guilty, just handsome.

I hope Sherman is ok and the plastic just passes harmlessly on through his system.

I do want to give you a pat on the back for actually calling the vet at the time you made your post. It's so frustrating for me to see people on here (mostly newbies) with serious medical problems and they're asking advice on a message board rather than calling the vet. Kudos to you!

I would *NOT* have him try to hurl it up -
IF it is a large piece, it could become wedged and/or do damage coming back up.

Usually the throw-up to eliminate is only done with SOME poisons.

When the Two Mutts gobbled up a 1/2 chicken worth of cooked chicken BONES;
the ER Vet suggested QUICKLY feeding them multiple slices of white BREAD -
idea being to have the partially chewed bread form a "protective wrap" around the bones in their tummies ... and "pad" the trip out the rear end.

I "bagged" and "examined" dawg poop for TWO WEEKS - *watching* for bone fragments.
(Never found a single piece!)

I'd bet the Vet suggests an X-ray be taken.

I'd just watch him for any signs of distress--difficulty with bowel movements, lethargic, refusal to eat, vomitting. Giving him some bread is a good idea. My vet has suggested that in the past too. Chances are it will pass on it's own without any trouble.
