    New Trick!

Balancing a treat on my nose?

I don't understand the point of this! It really looks much better IN my mouth! At least I get to try to flip and catch it when I'm done!

Why can't she teach me something useful?!....Like....de-stuffing my toys...pruning the trees...pestering the little black poodle...OH WAIT, I'm already good at those things!!

Now she says I'm TOO good at one of my tricks! I don't understand! I thought ringing bell on the door was for my maid service! HELLO?! Need to pee here, hurry it up!!

One trick she *hasn't* taught me is "playing dead"....I think I'm good enough at this one already! What do you think? It's gotta be better then the "treat-on-the-nose" trick!

Great trick Nebo, think you could teach Roxey to be that still when I try it on her? She's almost there, but not quite. Maybe if I tell her you learned it (and your only 7 mos!), so can she (already an old girl at 1 1/2 yrs!)
Ohhhh, playing dead thought, she's always been great at that one, see?! This was a long time ago! (don't it look like they are smiling when they lay like that?!)

But this is her new trick, hugging the couch, do you know that one?

I noticed Nebo is going through his "funny lookin" stage, like his body, head & head are not proportioned right. Looks kinda like this...

What a cutie!!!! Amy, you need to teach me how you taught Nebo that "balancing the treat" trick. Kia won't do it and my dad is trying and trying.. LOL!

As for playing dead....See! I can play dead... oh wait... my eyes are open.

And unproportional..... I can do that.

    Thanks everyone!!

LOL Anna that face pic of Roxey totally cracked me up! You know, Nebo and Roxey really look a lot alike except for the coloring! He says to tell Roxey that he is also very good at the "hugging the couch" trick. I have a pic (attached) it's not the best, but I've seen him do that many times. He probably is going through that "funny looking" stage....he has the big ears and the goofy expression....he really looks odd in closeups.

trisha0503, CUTE pic of Missy! I wanna rub that belly too!

ramanth, LOL that pic of Kia is hilarious! I love the closeup "unproportional" too hehe.

KayAnn, sorry to hear that you are sick! lol You *always* just leave without saying good-bye, so I didn't think anything of it.

As far as teaching him the trick. I know this sounds stupid, but I have the book "Dog Tricks for Dummies" and it is really a very informative book. It shows you how to teach tricks in steps...spread out over days, and also uses clicker training methods.

Here, I'm going to type what it says in the book. I hope it is helpful, let me know if any of you are able to teach this to your dogs!

You'll need to break this one into two parts: the balance, and the flip and catch.

    Balancing Act

This first part trains your dog to keep her nose still:

    1. Line up treats on a nearby table
    2. Put your dog on a sit-stay
    3. Gently hold your dog's nose steady for 5 seconds, reminding "stay" (actually I used the word "wait" instead) if she gets restless. Click and reward her for her steadiness.
    4. Repeat step 3 five times.

Later that day or the next day

    5. Repeat steps 1-3 above, but place a treat on your dog's nose while you steady it, reminding "stay."
    6. After 5 seconds, say "Okay," and remove the treat that's on her nose.
    7. Reward her with a different treat, so that she does not become obsessed with the treat that's on her nose.
    8. Repeat this exercise four times, then stop for the day.
    9. Continue to practice this step until your dog is proficient at balancing the treat on her nose for at least 15 seconds, no nose-holding required.

    Flip and Catch

Teach the flip and catch only after perfecting the balance.

    1. Balance a treat on your dog's nose, then introduce the next concept (the flip) by saying "Okay" as you slide the treat from your dog's nose to her mouth.

After a day or two you should notice that your dog tries to flip the treat herself. Praise her only if her flip follows your "Okay."

If she flips prematurely say, "Ep ep" (I say "uh-uh" instead) and practice the balance alone a few times before continuing.

    2. Balance the treat on her nose and command "stay."
    3. Walk back 3 feet and pause. Vary the length of the pauses as you practice.
    4. Say "Okay" for the catch and make a big fuss when she does, praising your dog with lots of love.

To help your dog learn to wait for your "Okay" before flipping the treat, vary the balance time before sliding the treat into her mouth.
