Thread: My Poor Scruff Is Sick. RE-CHECK UPDATE 2/2/107 PG 3

I called my vet to see how much they charge and they said since there are several surgical ways that it can be done they would have to evaluate the dig before they could give an estimate. But I am sure it can't be as much as the vets estimates that you have been given. I would take and get a second opinion I think.

Thank you Melissa for calling for me.

I have taken him for a second opinion. The vet said the same as the first. I found a vet in Plainfield, Illinois that will do it as soon as Saturday for between $800 and $1100. Every other vet had no openings till Monday...I don't understand that, or they were double the price. I am working on borrowing the money or part of the money even from my children's grandma. She said she would call me tomorrow and let me know if it is a go or not. I pray she says yes. I don't want to wait until Saturday, but I have to. I just hope Scruff can wait. Thank you again everybody.

Tracy - is there anything you can give him that might help a bit? Cranberry capsule powder in some wet food? Something to increase the acidity of his urine?

It might dissolve just a tiny bit, and make him more comfy til surgery.

Anyone else here know about this?

Tracy, I'm so sorry to hear this. When Storm was blocked and needed surgery I just had to use my credit card. I think I ended up needing to use 2 credit cards because they needed the money asap. I hope that you'll be able to get the money that you need and that Scruffy will be okay. Lots of prayers and positive thoughts are being sent your way. Please take care. (((HUGS)))

Have you ever heard of Care Credit? I pm'd you about it but I'll also post it here so others can see the link. Care Credit. Maybe this will help.

I agree you are running out of time. If the blockage has been found by two vets, then the exploratory would produce something as apparently its obvious. Maybe they can give you a cap on worse case scenio how much. I know my vet does payments-

Tracy, I second the Care Credit. I had a Visa but didn't want to risk maxing it out with Chipper's growing vet bill.

So I applied right at the animal hospital, got approved, and had his bill put on that.

If you give me your address, I can send a little something to chip in.

If the X-ray didn't show a bunch of stones like the first vet claimed, isn't there a medicine he can be given to disolve the one stone?

Give Scruff some love for me.

Scruff spent the night in our bed with us last night. When we woke up there was a big wet spot where he was laying. I let him outside this morning and he urinated a little better then he did yesterday. He didn't seem to strain as much. I just let him out again and he urinated in a small stream, stopped, walked around and urinated a little again. I am thinking, but don't want to jinx anything, that he may have passed the stone. I am taking him into another vet at 11:45 am CST for a quote and to see if he may have passed it. Fingers crossed please!! I pray he is okay now. If not, I am awaiting a phone call from my kids' grandmother about lending me part of the money. I tried care credit, was denied. I contacted IMOM, but nothing yet. Thank you everybody...I know there is hope somewhere.

    Scruff

I just e-mailed my niece who is a vet in CT. She graduated from Ohio State which is the best vet college in the country. I will let you know what she says as soon as I hear back from her. Monica

I Know this is a bit after the event, Im from england and I have pet insurance, I know how awful it would be if my dog got ill, but I know no matter what I wont have to worry about vet bills as he is covered. I do hope your dog gets better.

Well, we are home. Scruff is doing great. The vet said he seems to have passed it. Which means.....NO SURGERY!! YIPPY!! He did not do a cathader on Scruff. He said the vets yesterday attempted it twice and sometimes bacteria can be inserted with the cathader. He did not want to irrated Scruff urethra anymore. I have to get a urine sample from Scruff and bring it to the vet's office in the morning. They want to check to see if he as a URI. The vet also said that it could've been a URI all along and he was swollen, that would cause him not to beable to urinate properly. The vet saw a small spot on the x-rays that I brought with me at the bottom of the bladder. He said that could've been the stone, but he can't be 100% sure because it was so small, but that could've been the blockage and what Scruff may have passed. I was told just to keep a good eye on Scruff for the next few weeks and make sure he is urinating properly. I was also told not to change his diet. He is on Innova and the vet would like him to stay on that. I liked the vet and so did Scruff, so we are keeping Lepar as Scruff's new vet. I made an appointment for Scruff's shots that are due in Febuary. Thank god everything is okay....it really was a much needed miracle!!

Thank you everybody for all your help and support! Oh, Help-A-Pet also called me after I left the vet. I told them what happened and they said if it comes back or anything else happens I can reapply. Angels are on my side today. Thank you again everybody, you guys are great!
