I sat on the couch and pulled my knees up to my chest. I looked out the window in front of me and watched the sun appear from the east. A million thoughts were flowing through my head about my mother, about these children that were now under my supervision and care, and about how Spencer’s mom understood it all. Before I knew it, it was 7am, and Spencer came thundering down the hall, still half asleep.

“Did you sleep okay?� Spencer whispered.
“Yeah. I could have moved… I didn’t mean to fall asleep in your bed.� I said, blushing.
“It’s okay.� Spencer whispered, and laughed. He took some orange juice out of the fridge and poured two glasses. I took a small sip of mine, but didn’t feel hungry or thirsty. I looked out the window again and felt a tear on my cheek. I wiped it away quickly to avoid Spencer seeing, but he had.

Spencer sat down in the chair next to me and turned towards me.
“It’s okay, Kyla.� His finger touched my cheek and he wiped a tear away. “Please don’t cry anymore. I hate seeing you cry.� He said.
I shook my head.
“Spencer, my mom died, I can’t help it!� I almost yelled. I got up and walked outside. I paced back and forth on their deck. I had huge tears plastered on my face and my eyes were red and swollen. I rested my elbows on the railing of the deck and looked down. How I longed to just jump over the edge of this deck, plunge two stories down and end all the pain I had just endured in the past two days.

I climbed over the ledge and sat on the railing. I wobbled back and forth, trying to keep my balance. The wind blew through my snarled black hair, and I heard Kendra asking for me in the house. Spencer told her I was out on the deck. I broke into hysterical sobs and cried, my hands clenched onto the railing. Spencer heard me wailing and came running out onto the deck.
“What are you doing?� he screamed, and ran towards me. He grabbed me around the waist and pulled me back over the railing. I gave in without a fight and sat on the deck.

“You can. I know you can. You’ve taken care of Kendra, Matthew, Sam and Lexie for the longest time. I have so much faith in you, Kyla.� He said calmly. “You are going to stay here, and my mom and I will help, Kyla. I promise.�
I didn’t say anything. I just pulled my knees up to my chest and wiped my teary eyes. Spencer came forward and put his legs to the side of mine and put his head on my head. His hands came to the side of my face and he lifted my head and kissed me. I almost didn’t feel it; it was as if I was numb from all the pain. I closed my eyes and sniffled more, and Spencer began to rub my back.
