I danno if this is true or not,, but the lady we got Kirby off of said that his dad was black. but she forgot what color the mother was.![]()
and when i give Kirby a bath,, he has patches of darker skin here and there but you really have to be looking. LOL
and people keep calling him a 'apricot'. hes the strangest looking apricot ive ever seen.
this is an apricot.
he looks nothing like it.

never mind the crappy breeders though. just using the pictures as a color examples
Okay, I've researched a lot in this area so here I go
Black Labs are the dominant gene in all of the Lab colors. They can carry every color. In order for a black Lab to have yellow puppies, they must carry the yellow gene. A black Lab who has puppies with another black Lab can result in a litter with all colors. Blacks are the only ones who can carry every single color, so in order for black puppies to be in a litter there must be a black parent.
Was there any chocolate puppies in the litter? If so, Sophie's mother is tri-factored, which means that she carries all three colors. And, in order for yellow puppies to result between these two, BOTH must carry yellow because chocolate can be dominant over yellow. But, if there were no chocolate puppies it is most likely that Sophie's mom doesn't carry chocolate, only black and yellow. Sophie's dad obviously carries chocolate and yellow (black is the only color that produces black puppies).
I can't remember if Sophie is a dudley or not. A dudley is like both of my Labbies (they're in my siggy). Instead of a black nose and black skin around the mouth and eyes, they will have chocolate pigment. This will result in nearly every litter where there are both chocolate and yellow puppies in the litter. It is a fault, and the dog cannot be shown. My girls are still perfect in my eyes though
Oh, and a lot of people will say that their dog used to have a black nose but has turned dudley. Your Lab cannot "turn" dudley, once a dudley, always a dudley. Born black, always black. BUT, most yellow Labs who are born with black pigment will have brown noses during the winter months or once they get older. They're skin will stay black, though.
These websites are really interesting if you're wanting to learn more.
Coat Color Inheritance in Labs -- This one is, in my opinion, the easiest to understand. If you scroll down some once you get on the page there are pictures and links to click on. The third one is the black X chocolate breeding, and it will give you all the color combinations that can happen in a breeding. The second to last one is a breeding that resulted in blacks and yellows, and the very last one resulted in all colors.
Coat Color Inheritance #2 - This is a page about a DNA test, however if you scroll down some it has a table. But, I do prefer the first link I provided over this one.
Coat Color Inheritance #3 - Another good one ... the first link is still my favorite though
Coat Color Inheritance #4 - A really good one. Explains it mostly in words rather than with pictures, so it is a little bit harder to understand.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask. We were originally planning on breeding Nova so I did a ton of research on the breed as a whole. She got spayed the other day, and I don't think I'll ever breed, but I still read up on these things. They're just interesting![]()
Thank you so so much for explaining it to me lol. I had a nice read with my tea.Originally Posted by .sarah

You're welcome. It's interesting to me, so it was fun typing out![]()

ThanksI took it last night. As soon as I can I'm going to post all of the pictures that I took. Mandy was too sleepy to get in the pictures, but I got a lot of good ones of the Labs. Nova is the one in the Santa hat, the other is Luka.
