HAS ANYONE TRIED ONE OF THOSE FOOD TOYS?

We were at Petsmart and I bought Daisy and Perry one of those little square hard plastic toys where you put bits of small food in it and they are supposed to play with it and the food comes out. We put their dry rice and lamb in it. Well we started a hornets next, first of all neither of them wanted to roll it around, they waited for us to do it for them, then when they found the food came out Daisy would lay next to it and wouldn't let Perry near it. Everytime he came near she would growl at him. It was pretty funny in a way, but I had to pick it up or she would have laid by it all day to guard the food.

I've tried these too and none of my dogs have quite figured them out. We use them at the shelter though and a lot of dogs use them the right way. I recently donated mine to the shelter because Reece just looks at it then looks at me and expects ME to do the work.

I can stick a Milk Bone inside a Kong and Hannah will maneuver it until the Milk Bone falls out. Tucker on the other hand does not understand the concept.

I have one of those cubes too. When I bought it, I had a Rotty (Kilo) and Husky (Dakota). Kilo didn't play with it but Dakota figured it out right away and still plays with it occasionally. I got another dog, a Shepherd, (Patience) and she doesn't play with it either. Patience expects me to do it for her alos, just like Kilo did.

I got one of the cubes too - bug really wanted the Wiggly Giggly thing but luckily i had read the warning on those toys. I trip over the cube all the time, bug just walks past it as if its part of the furniture! i had tried one of the little kong type toys a while ago - where you stick the treat in the hole - she didn't like that either. But i really like aly's suggestion of donating it to the shelter! i'm sure bug won't miss it and my toes may feel better!
now you give bug one of those bad hair star stuffed fleece toys and prepare to laugh! she loves it (she's on her fourth one!)

Shai loves her's. When she sees me get the treats to put in it she gets beside herself. But if I put her food in it she is like "Wassup with dat???" She only chases it if her "Buddy Bits" are in it. She has a big ball here at home and she has a little buster cube at grandpa's.
She also likes this little ab-wheel thing I boughtat Wal Mart, its got 2 wheels and a spoke thru it and you get on the floor and wheel it and you are supposed to get"Rock Hard Abs" (yeah whatever) anyway she walks up to it and smacks it with her paw and sends it sailing across the floor! She uses it more than I do!!!

bugmom: Is the Wiggly Giggly toy the one that's a green ball and makes those funny noises that you can get at Pet Smart? If so, what are the warnings on it?

I have a big Wiggly-Giggly ball too but guess I didn't read any warnings. But when tatsxxx11 reported deaths from the ball, from the toxic zinc coated noise makers inside, I decided it's a gonner, expensive or not.

My guys favorite toys are sterilized bones and fleece formed in any shape. I leave the squeeker in until the first washing. Then a quick fix makes it safe. Big ropes are fun too and they race around the house "tied" together, knocking things over in their struggle to hold on. I used to get the squeeky rubber balls and toys, but 11 mo old Moses makes a meal of them fast. Such pretty colored bits in his poop. The couple that are left are supervised play only. I get a lot of their toys from a second-hand store here called Savers. Baby stuffed items are really sturdy and last. They sometimes have fleece toys and usually lots of tennis balls. Too many toys, never.

I've never tried one, but sometimes when they break a tennis ball, I fill it with food and let them play with it.

It's kind of funny to see the different ways they try to get the food out. Iris and Raven just try to lick it out and paw it around. Carl has figured out that if you put your paw on top of it and press down, the food spills out! Smart guy!!!

The dog at my office has one of the roundish ones, which we put kibble in and he loves it - until the treats run out. He had a bigger, square one that was harder to roll, that he didn't play with, so we gave it to my Dad's dog (a St. Bernard) who also ignored it, so size was apprently NOT the problem!

My girls absolutely love peanut butter or milkbones in the Kong toy. But I have cut them back. They need to lose weight and those girls can get the treats out WAY too fast!!!

Thanks Rachel. I just went back and viewed her drawings. What talented folks we have here at Pet Talk! Loved the one of Tucker too and Jackie's schnauzers!! Absolutely wonderful! Wish I could draw, but even stick figures are hard for me.

We have one of the large breed kongs for our Great Dane. We mix kibble with peanut butter, fill it, freeze it and then give it to Master Dane. He loves to lick, lick, lick the kong, but hasn't quite figured out that it is a fun toy too. We take it outsdie and toss it around a bit, but he just likes the licking part.
