well Ive been in and out of PT over the last several months, and havent introduced my newest member, Alki (named after a neighborhood/beach in Seattle where the settlers of the city first landed from NY). I adopted her 4 months ago (amazing to think its only been 4 months!!) from a friend of a friend. When I was getting ready to move to a new apt in april I was thinking of adopting another aussie, brock had lived the last year with another dog and it was wonderful for him, so I didnt want him to lose that. there was an aussie in another state I was planning to adopt but the rescue group was really weird and never returned a lot of my emails and never contacted me after I sent my adoption application (the dog is STILL listed on petfinder btw...) so anyway, I guess that turned out to be a good thing because if I had gotten him Id never have been able to save Alki.
So her story is a bit confusing, lol. Okay so, her former owner (not sure why, I think maybe he was moving or something) had surrendered her to a shelter which euthanizes ALL pits no matter what, and even though he knew that he left her anyway. so, his ex-girlfriend is my friend's neighbor, and she found out that alki was going to be killed, and went to save her. she unfortunately already had a full house with 2 puppies and 2 small kids, so she needed to find her a home.
SO, my friend knew she was looking and asked me one day out of the blue if I wanted a pit bull. lol I dont think she thought Id say yes, but asked just in case. but of course I said yes! Ive always wanted a pit and had already asked my new landlord before I moved in if they had any breed restrictions, specifically for pit bulls, and she said no, so I knew itd be okay that way. so I said I just had to meet her and introduce her to brock and see how they got along. so a couple days later I went and picked her up and took her home. I planned to give her a good 2 weeks to a month before I made a decision and if it didnt work out I would contact one of the 5 pit bull only resuce groups in the state.
well, long story short shes turned out to be the most perfect addition to my fur family! I knew after the first week that she wasnt going anywhere. lol shes great with the cats, and is submissive which works well with brocks semi dominant attitude. they love to wrestle and race through the apt together and then crash out on the floor together.
she is amazingly smart and driven, and has been a breeze and a pleasure to train. she had no training when I got her, not even potty training, which came as a shock to me, I assumed she had at least some but GUESS NOT. lol her former owner physically disiplined her and for a long time she was very hand shy and easily "hurt" by too harsh of a tone. she has come a long way and has become extremely confident and is very eager to please. she is still slightly stand offish to new people in an unfamiliar environment, doesnt like them coming at her too fast, but she does love meeting new people, and gets very excited, and warms up quickly. she also had never worn a leash or collar when I got her, and I assume she was kept as an outdoor dog since she wasnt potty trained. she is so gorgeous and gentle and sweet and kind and goofy and playful. she is all pit bull. and its been a joy spreading the good pit bull word around the city with her.
now for the photos! (Ill try not to go too crazy! lol):
her first day with me; kinda hard to tell her but her coat was very poor quality (she was being fed kibbles & bits- EW!!! lol)
