Gmail is an invitational e-mail system. It's exactly like Yahoo! or Hotmail, except it's more "exclusive" and the only way to get in is through an invitation or, actually, I think they started this thing where you can sign up with your mobile phone. I saw it on the log-in page but didn't click the link. I love its format, but the ONLY thing I wish they had is smileys!
