Bubble and Squeak are adorable. Bubble looks a lot like our tortie Cammie, but Cammie doesn't have any white on her belly. If I remember correctly (from my 3 years in Scotland) Bubble and Squeak is the nickname of some food dish. I can't remember exactly what it was because I was only 3 when we left Scotland. Are Bubble and Squeak named for the dish? What is Bubble and Squeak?

Now, I hope Maggie doesn't mind, but I went and found a recipe for Bubble and Squeak. I think it is one of those traditional recipes that everyone knows the names of, but no-one has ever actually eaten.

BUBBLE AND SQUEAK

3 potatoes, boiled, cooled & mashed
4 c. cabbage, chopped and blanched
1 med. onion, chopped
1/2 c. ham, cooked & diced
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. sugar
3 slices bacon, fried

Fry bacon. Remove from skillet and reserve. Mix all of the other ingredients (by hand) in the skillet with bacon drippings. Cook until brown, about 20 minutes, over medium heat. Invert onto a warm plate. Crumble bacon on top.

Now, Kuhio98, I didn't know you had been in Scotland until you were three!

Thank you. Another mystery solved. I wonder why in the world it's called Bubble and Squeak? Oh well.... I think I much prefer the feline Bubble and Squeak, but maybe I'll try it someday.

My father was in the U.S. Air Force so we went from California (where I was born) to Scotland (where my sister was born) to Mississippi (where my brother was born) to German, Turkey, Pakistan, Taiwan and then to Alaska where I unpacked my bags for good!

Oooo, Not to hijack this thread but I also remember something called Bangers and Mash. I can't remember if I liked it or not. Anyone know what the heck that is?

Bangers and mash is sausages and mashed potato, common meal for us too.

Those two cats are gorgeous and Squeak looks like she's doing some serious sleeping!

... and before anyone asks, Toad in the Hole is sausages cooked with a kind of Yorkshire Pudding batter.
