    Bump on Kia's head

On Tuesday, a friend of mine found this bump on Kia while petting her.

She said it appeared to be only a pimple but it's in a strange spot.

It's on the back of her head below her right ear.

She's never gotten canine acne before and from all my research it's more common on the face and muzzle.

    She doesn't scratch at it.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

  2. RB Tigger had a couple of those as well. Identical. On her eye and as well on the back of her head. It never bothered her either. I asked the vet and he told us to not worry about it and that it wouldn't cause her any harm. Thats all I can remember, sorry.

It looks quite a bit like the warts (at least that's what one vet called them, not sure of the techincal term) that older dogs get. Reggie has some and I see older dogs in the grooming salon with them all the time. They are usually light pink though not red like that and Kia isn't that old so maybe have a vet check it out. It could be insect bite or something too but I'd think it would be itching her?

    She's not scratching it.

Took Kia to the vet yesterday. I was sure it was just a pimple or perhaps a bug bite but I still needed peace of mind.

Turns out it's a Histiocytoma (a benign tumor). I have an ointment to put on it twice a day. It should be gone in two weeks. If not, she'll need to go back to the vet.

Keep a close tab on lumps

For the next 6 months make it a point to check your dog at least once a week for such things as swollen lymph nodes or the presence of other swellings. Puppy will like the extra attention. Sometimes a benign cancer is a signal of a possibly impaired immune system. At least it was for mine. If nothing shows up in that time frame then you're safe.

    Benign is good news.
Wishing her lump to be gone soon.
My Sisters Shitsu (sp) has benign tumors
    on her back.
I guess lumps also come with age.

At work we constantly get dogs that come in with those -- most commonly cockers and bichons. You're lucky she only has one! I've seen cockers with atleast 50 or 60 of them all over!
