Our trip to Haines, AK(Alaska)..tons of pics...

So we left Saturday at noon. The drive to Haines takes a little over four hours. This time it took closer to 5 as we had to go through some nasty road construction areas! It's a beautiful drive though:

Taken through the windshield on the Haines Highway.

Taken at the rest stop where we pulled over to eat lunch.

After a little chat with the very nice U.S. customs officer, we arrived in Haines, AK.

I refuse to sleep in a tent so we rented this little cabin.

The view from our cabin deck.

Me hanging out on the deck before we left for the concert.

    Many more coming..............

    The concert......

Late in the afternoon, we headed over to the South East Alaska State Fair. We wandered around the grounds, saw lots of people we knew from the Yukon, many we hadn't seen for months at home! At 9pm, the concert started--this is the reason we were in Haines!

Allison Moorer opened for Steve Earle. She is a very talented young woman. That tiny body holds a massive voice! She's also engaged to Steve. They were very sweet on stage together (they sang a duet during his show) Here's hoping that his seventh marriage works out!

Then came Steve Earle!!! He seemed a little nervous at first, but there was some contraversy over him playing at the fair. Some of the locals thought he was too political. However, the crowd loved him and he quickly relaxed.

I have seen alot of Steve Earle shows--one on every tour since the Copperhead Road album, 18 years ago! This was the best one ever. He played for close to three hours, then came back out and did a 3 song encore. He was chatty with crowd, ranted lots about his political beliefs. It was a fabulous show!!

    Still more coming............

    Sunday...

On Sunday we were up early and headed out on to the ocean. My co-worker was in Haines with her hubby and their fishing boat. So we got to go fishing for Halibut. Well, Stuart fished, I took pictures. The fish weren't biting but we had a good time anyway and the surroundings were stunning!

There are lots of glaciers surrounding the Haines area. This is the Rainbow Glacier.

    Stuart on the boat.

Another glacier, the Davidson I think.

Mid-afternoon the weather started to get a bit nasty out in the open ocean so we headed back to the marina. This was taken in the Lynn Canal area.

Sunday night we had a campfire and went hiking around the area. There are many, many bears in the area. We saw a young grizzly, but it was too dark for the picture to turn out. The salmon were running in the river so the bears were out eating in the evenings.

Monday morning, we headed out in the kayaks. Stuart had borrowed a kayak from a friend of his.

He tried fly-fishing from it, but it was hard to land a fish from in the boat. I have to give him credit--he hates kayaking, but tried it for my benefit!

After a couple hours, he went fly-fishing on the Chilkoot River, which he truly loves to do and I kept paddling by myself.

Chilkoot Lake is a massive, stunning place!

This is the entrance to the Lake. The picture doesn't do it justice. It's awe-inspiring when you first see it.

    Heading home...

Late Monday afternoon, we had to head home. We seriously considered staying an extra day, but the next ferry sailing wasn't until Wednesday and we couldn't get away with quite that long!

On the ferry, pulling out of the Haines harbour.

Stuart lounging on the ferry's deck.

    me on the deck.

More glaciers were visible along the ferry route.

And lots of waterfalls. I love seeing waterfalls.

An hour later, we pulled into the Skagway, Alaska port. Skagway is a major stop for cruise ships. This huge ship was right beside our ferry. The ferry was large, but it looked like a toy beside the cruise ships! Skagway is a tourist trap and there were thousands of tourists in town on Monday. We didn't stay long!

This was taken at the Canadian Customs office. The drive from Skagway to Whitehorse is only a couple hours long, but it's very pretty too.

And then we were home, much to the huskies' delight!

I did the same thing. I thought why did she travel all the
way to Arkansas when the concert was in Alaska? Thought it
    was my eyes.

I'm still looking at the photos. Alaska is gorgeous country.

    AK - Alaska
    AR - Arkansas

Glacier ~ Thanks for sharing. I haven't been to Haines in years and it's just as beautiful as I remember.

BTW - How did you edit the subject title to include (Alaska)? Seems I've tried to edit my subjects before and couldn't get it to work.
