    Very Disturbing Dog Food Study

I can't believe they were allowed to do this. This is an old study. Wonder if it's still occuring? That is so wrong.

I used to feed Duke Pedigree a long time ago, too. Thank goodness his food now isn't on there. The drugs came from euthanised animals, supposedly.

I did the right thing by setting you free
But the pain is very deep.
If only I could turn back time, forever, you I'd keep.
    I miss you

I hear you whimper in your sleep
I gently pet you and say, no bad dreams
It will be alright, to my dog as dark as night.

Fur as dark as the night.
    Join me on this flight.
Paws of love that follow me.
In my heart you'll forever be.

How I wish I could hold you near.
Turn back time to make it so.
Hug you close and never let go.

I'm reading it, but, what's pentobarbital?

I wouldn't feed any of those on the lists, if I were to feed a dog processed food, anyway...but, I'm still interested in hearing about the drug.

Is that the same as pentobarbital? I'd heard of phenobarbitol, but, thought what they were talking about was something different. Is it just a typo on the study, then?

    Just looked up pentobarbital....

"a granular barbiturate C11H18N2O3 used especially in the form of its sodium or calcium salt as a sedative, hypnotic, and antispasmodic "

    and, phenobarbitol....

"A sedating medication used to control seizures"

I guess they're not the same drug, but, similar results from taking them.....I was about to disregard that entire study if they couldn't even spell the drug correctly.

Pentobarbital and phenobarbital are both used to put animals to sleep. The thing is, when you find it in dog food, you know it came from a euthanised dog or cat. They don't use either of these on livestock. It's too expensive.

The study is old though -- since Nutro was alerted of the problem, they got everything under control and there is no more pento in their food. Pedigree on the other hand does have it. They are now famous for putting euthanised pets in their foods.

Yeah, I'd already posted the definition, cuz I didn't know what they were....but, are you saying that because it's not used in euthanasia? I have heard from a couple people now, that it is....

It is also used for euthanasia. In small doses it can help with seizures, severe head pain, etc, but in large doses it kills. I do believe that it is the most common drug used for euthanasia.

That is disgusting...I mean really. Somehow it makes me ill to think that my dog could potentially be ingesting the remains of an euthinized animal.

WOW, nutro premium showed up, I feed Nutro natural choice for large breeds. I wonder if all nutro products have that ingredient?
I'm going to have to look into that.

There was an article in our local paper about a mans dog who was cremated. Well he later found out that the remains were used for glue & animal feeds. This was just recently. I'm going to see if I can find it on the online paper at all.
    It is scary & sad.
Soar high & free my sweet fur angels. I love you Nanook & Raustyk... forever & ever.

Wolfsoul mentioned that the study is old and that Nutro doesn't have that pentobarbitol in the food anymore....
