Update on Buck's hip's after vet check

We took Buck(my black lab) to the Vet hospital and had his hips checked. After testing him, they told us he has a torn calvicle. They said it's a very costly surgery to have fixed and he could tear it again or his other one as well. They said he can live with it with no serious problems if we keep his activity down to a min. and he loses some weight. There was a large dog at the hospital that belonged to one of the vets there that had the surgery a year ago, and tore it again 2 weeks ago along with her other clavicle on the other side. He said she was just going to have to live with it now because she was pretty old and surgery was to hard on her, and she was doing fine. What are your thoughts on this?

I would get another opinion...although the fact they are not pushing for major costly surgery is always a plus...for me it means they are looking out for the dog more than their pocketbooks. However, as being someone that lives with "soft tissue damage" in both my right shoulder and my left hip, being in constant pain is exhausting and not a lot of fun. If the tear is causing your dog low level pain then that is not good either. I would read up as much as I can on the internet and in the library, get a second opinion from another vet and watch your dog...Bucky will let you know what he needs. Losing weight will certainly help I am sure.

I didn't think dogs had a clavicle. Maybe they meant
a ligament. That can be fixed & it is expensive but the dog can
fully recover from it. It can happen again with another ligament
tear, there are no guarantees. I know it is very painful for the
dog until it heals. Good luck with Buck.
