Filou at the homeopathic vet

Now this was an adventure!

This vet was different. On one hand he didn't wear a coat, on the other hand he took lots of time, two hours. Filou was allowed to leave his box and to walk around while the vet asked us all kind of questions about how he is, how he sleeps, what he eats, how he plays what he likes, what he dislikes...........

Filou first sat upright in his carrier, then he jumped out and began to systematically examine everything. First he was under a file cabinet for 3 minutes but then he came out. The vet had his dog, a gorgeous Golden in the other room. When he went over to pick something, forgot what, Filou followed him. He immediately went over to the dog who was lying in the floor as quiet as could be and walked over to his rear end. The dog did one sway with the tail and Filou went away But all very quiet and nothing about panic.

Filou then continued to make sure everything in the room was his (by giving headbumpies to every corner). He liked the adventure and the attention he got. He even started to sniff the vet, jumped on our shoulders and finally on the vet's shoulder. He stepped on everything in high places but all very careful and self-assured.

Now about the medical part: This vet agrees: we are in a very early stage and he thinks even it might be too early for the sub-Q fluids as he is not de-hydrated. But he had nothing against it.

He wants to give him something that should help for more drinking as improving the water intake is the best thing you can do against kidney problems. He will send us the medicine after having evaluated all we told him.

He checked Filou and found nothing worrying. His diet is important but just as our usual vet he says half kidney diet and half other food would be good. He recommended a local biological food (in cans) that is made by a butcher here who uses meat in very good quality, not just the odd ends that are used in industrial food. It is not only about low proteine but also about good quality proteine (I've read that on the web before). In addition we'll try Royal Canin kidney diet- as the Hill's didn't work out.

To his opinion the kidneys still function- just not as good as they used too.

We feel a little relieved at the moment and are looking forward to the homeopathic meds.

Filou definitely enjoyed this visit and I was really proud of him - how curious, awake, well behaved and self assured he was.

Oh Barbara, that is wonderful news!!! Sounds like Filou was a very good boy and had quite the adventure. It does sound like he is in the very early stage and hopefully, he will have many, many healthy and happy years ahead!

Barbara, I'm so glad to hear that Filou was happy with this new "vet". It really sounds as though he enjoyed the visit. I so hope that he'll be able to get some food which will delay the kidney problems for a long, long time! I'm feeling positive about that.

Filou, we're all proud of you! Enjoy getting spoiled and eat whatever your mommy gives you! Hope you'll have many happy years together yet!

Barbara, I noticed that the puddles in the sand box have grown quite a lot bigger since Fister got his "Fresh Flow".

Two hours?! I've never heard of any vet taking two hours with one animal, but that's good because it's like he really wanted to take the time to get to know Filou personally instead of just prescribing the usual standard meds. Sounds like a wonderful visit and a productive one too, and it also sounds like you're really on top of Filou's kidney issues which means he'll be around for a long long time to come...which is a wonderful thing!

LOL....Debbie is amazed the time the vet took with Filou and I am amazed at how well-behaved Filou was for those two hours!

Randi and I were thinking alike....maybe a fountain....Edwina drinks more since we got one (it was already the water source when Eddie arrived...and he supplements it with "well water")

I will be interested to hear what medicines he perscribes. Does he make his medicines?

And most of all....I am thrilled for the good report on little Filou!

Such wonderful news to hear. I hope the new diet does the trick. I feed my cats Royal Canin, but not the specialized style. They seem to like it! I do switch around every now and then... I also give them Abady canned food - rather pricey but keeps them healthy.

I hope Filou continues to do better and you have many, many more good years.

Sounds like this homeopathic vet could be a way to go. A vet that would take that much time with one animal has to really care and want to make sure he covers all the basics so he can do what is best for the animal. And Filou making himself right at home that is a definate good sign too. Keep up posted. I really hope this vet turns out as good and caring as he seems.

I haven't been here for a couple of days, but I'm back, and glad to see that Filou is doing well!!

Goldens are wonderful dogs! I had one a long time ago (yes, it eventually outweighed me!!) and he was very good around my RB Willy - who didn't like too many people!

Glad to hear that Filou was being curious too, that means he is feeling better!!

This is such good news, I love when doctors take the time to TALK to you, get to know you (I had a very nice experience with a doc at my new gym). With such care, Filou is going to be like new very for many many years We love him!

Barbara, I also recommend water fountain if you don’t already have one.
I have the Drinkwell and it’s truly the best thing I ever bought for my cats.
I have two cats with previous bladder problems and I’m constantly watching them when they use the litter box and they are definitely drinking much more water then before.
The local food sounds great.
I hope that Filou will continue to feel better.

Awwww, what a good boy Filou is! My Max would not have tolerated a 2 hour visit. All fingers and paws crossed here that the diet and meds do the trick.
