    Kittens With Coccidia

Hi all. I just wanted to learn more about kittens with Coccidia because I just found out yesterday that my Starr may have this. The foster mom said that at least one of the kittens was having watery diarrhea but nothing extememly bad. She started them all on Albon and has been giving it to them for 10 days. Since at least one of them was still having diarrhea problems, she went to her vet and brought in a stool sample and they did a fecal smear which was then diagnosed as coccidia. They're now getting a second round of Albon and she hopes that this will clear it up.

Do you know how long it will take to treat? I remember that Storm had coccidia when I adopted him and he was 1 year old. I only needed one round of treatment for him and this cleared him up. I also know that it's contagious so I certainly don't want to expose my other furkids to this when I bring Starr home. I'm sure that the foster mom will retest him againafter his treatment but I think I should probably have a fecal smear/flotation done by my vet too. What do you think? Starr is now 12 weeks old and still only 1 3/4lbs. This sounds so small for a 12 week old male doesn't it? Do you think it's due to him having coccidia?

When I saw him a month ago, he was still very small but was eating very well. He'd play and then go eat some dry food and play again etc. The foster mom also feeds them wet food at least 2 times a day. He needs to be at least 2lbs before he can be neutered and I can't bring him home before he's fixed because it's against the law for a shelter or rescue group to adopt out an unfixed cat or kitten in California. I was hoping to have him home with me by the 4th of July weekend but now I don't know when he'll finally be home with me. I'm hoping to be able to visit him this Sunday and I'll be sure to take lots of pictures. Thanks for your help.

Filou had coccidia once when he was few years old- but no longer a kitten. One round of something cleared it and it never came back.

The vet told us they can get it from raw meat but in some thread someone said it's rather from contaminated water.

I hope Starr gets over it soon.

Weight: Maybe Starr will be a small cat when he's grown up- that meezer heritage does not always make up for big boys. Which should'n t mean he's not spunky Of course with coccidia he cannot put on weight.

Paws and fingers crossed for your little one.

Thanks for the link Donna. I'm hoping that this next course of Albon will do the trick. Their foster mom says she's an expert with kittens with diarrhea so I hope she's right about this.
