Loves the garbage

Hi everyone, I am new here. I just adopted a dog last weekend (German Shepherd) and I seem to have a small problem. He loves getting into the garbage can in the kitchen. He knocks it over and spreads the garbage all over the kitchen. I know he wants to get to the food, but is there any way to stop him from doing this? I have been hiding the garbage can in the bathroom when we are not home, but I would like to make him stop doing this in case I ever forget to hide the garbage. Any ideas?

May have to invest in a new trashcan. Like those metal ones that you have to step on the foot pedal for the top to open...they are heavy too, so they probably can't get knocked over as easily...

For the last 8 years my trash can has been on top of the washing machine. It's the only way to keep the dogs out of it for sure. Even the older ones (13) sniff the edges when I have it on the floor.

hi, welcome to pet talk...MAXIMUS never went for the kitchen trash....he always goes for the bathroom or the bedroom trash....he's got this thing about used kleenex...eww...we just don't have one in the bed room anymore, and the bath can is up on a box and has apparently forgotten about it....maybe you could put it under the sink....might mean a smaller can though...i'd love to hear more about your new baby...

My Jack dog does the same thing!! We tried buying trash cans with lids for the bathrooms and he just opens them up. He will take kleenexes and shed them around the house!

yeah. . the best way is to either get a metal trashcan like Robyn posted, or put it under your sink. Ours is under the sink, and there are baby-proof latches on them so the baby and the dog can't get to it

Thanks guys! I will try a smaller can under the sink. It has been a long time since I had a dog (since high school, about ten years ago she died) so I don't remember how we handled some of the problems. The dog we just adopted is AWESOME (3 1/2 year old German Shepherd mix), just have to work out some of the kinks. Thanks again!

We keep the trash in a bucket under the sink, and Mika emptied it all the time, even moved the chair we put in front. Then we put a kiddie-lock on it and have had no problems since. Every day when I get home there are a few kleenex's from the bathroom and bedroom scattered around!

This is the one we have and it is wonderful!

It seals tightly so that no one can smell anything tempting. Also if the kitties jump on it they don't fall in. LOL! My standard poodle, Whitney, who is now at the RB, tipped over our old trash can and helped herself to 3-4 bacon drippings soaked paper towels (we used them to microwave bacon) When I came home that day the trashcan was tipped over and Whitney's rear end was all that was visible. Her head was totally inside the can. Thankfully all of the paper towelsl passed.

My Bella is a tissue eater. I am thinking about getting one for the bathroom because now I have to store the bathroom trashcan on the top of the toilet.

We have a wooden trash can that my grandfather built (see attachment) - The dogs haven't ever tried to get into it no matter what's in it. It's a bit on the heavy side, too, so they can't tip it over. Of course, they never have shown an interest in anything other than what I give them, but I don't think anyone would be able to if they wanted.

Maybe you could look into building if not buying one?
