Coworker's 8-year-old son hits cat with baseball bat!

I was talking about my new little "foster" kitten at work today, and one of my co-workers told me that his 8-year-old son saw a cat run out of their garage, and chased it with a baseball bat, and hit it, and knocked it out cold! He said they thought the cat was dead, but after a few minutes it got up and shook it's head like it was in a daze, and ran off. They were worried when they thought it was dead, but laughed at it when it got up and acted dazed.

My coworker was actually LAUGHING about this! I was very upset. Why would he encourage his son to do something like this, and then tell others about it and laugh about it?!?

I told him I thought it was extremely cruel, and he just laughed and described the cat's reaction again. I don't particularly like this co-worker, and this just strenghtened my dislike for him. He doesn't seem to think this action by his son was anything to be concerned about. I feel sorry for him, and for his son, and for any animals they may ever run across!

I think his son more than anyone will suffer from his ignorance and cruelty. The fact that he is not instilling proper values about other beings is of great concern.

I agree. I think he should be extremely concerned about his son. Anyone who can show that type of cruelty to an innocent animal, will usually do much much worse to a human animal. It's a fact that most serial murderers abused animals first. It's scary.. I would avoid this co-worker but keep a close eye on him and his family.

Did they think it was a rat or mouse in the garage and feel bad about it afterwards or were they well aware of what they were doing?

Before I get some nasty posts: not that rats or mice or any animals deserve this treatment...!! It's just more common to treat them this way, as PESTS rather than PETS. I love them all so please don't PM me thinking am anti anything. I'm not, just that cats are usually someone pet, whereas rats and mice are usually wild animals.

I don't know how it works by you, but I would set social services on this family. They are very good around here at sending counselors to the school to talk to kids and then the parents find out usually from the child. When I was in 5th grade my ex-stepdad got counselors to come to school to talk to us on false claims of child abuse just to harass my mother. I think that if they did that the parents might straighten up a bit, of course they might immediately think about who called soc services.

The apple don't fall far from the tree. This guy is a jerk as is his son for hurting that poor animal!!

IRescue452 has the right idea. I'd also call Social Services and voice your concerns, as well as animal control.

How utterly cruel. Studies have shown that young children who do these things to animals grow up to do the same thigns to humans. A call to social services wouldn't be a bad idea.

how could he think he could get away with telling that story to
a known animal lover...meaning yourself...sounds as if he was
just trying to be mean ...and i can think of
better names than 'jerk' to refer to him
    anyway i'd tell on him...

What will really be funny is when the kid is a teenager and he hits his dad with a baseball bat. Then you'll have a good laugh at work, when he comes in and wonders why his son got the idea to hit him. Or at least I would laugh.

We can all rest assured that a jail cell is waiting for this delinquent child not too far in the future! The poor cat probably ended up dying from a concussion somewhere. I too would report this creep, and his spawn. Anyone want to chip in and purchase a remote island in the middle of nowhere to ship all these creeps to?

It would be easyer to ship all the people who were not crazy to an island. I suggest Turks and Caikos.
