Last night after work I had to stop at Petco to get Duncan some more dog food (and some treats. and some toys. You know how it is) On the way home, I was driving down a VERY busy road, not a highway but a 4 lane road with tons of traffic. All of a sudden, I saw something running to my right. All the cars hit their brakes. It was a young boxer dog running full speed into the road! She just missed getting hit by one car. Once the car started to go again, she started chasing it! So I'm about 2 cars behind this all watching it, like slow motion. I pull into an office complex driveway and jump out of the car. I head to the trunk because I know I have toys and treats there! I started beeping my horn at the little girl to get her attention and offer her a ride, treats, park, everything I can think of to possibly get her out of the road! She stands there for a minute and then runs to a lady who is standing at the door of a Japanese restaurant. She starts jumping up and down on the lady and I'm running towards her and yelling, "Grab her, grab her" The lady does nothing.
So, the dog sees me running over and comes over to me. I immediately pick her up because she has no collar on and I can't think of any other way to keep her out of the road. So, I'm walking through the parking lot carrying a 50lb+ boxer (barely! Thank God she was friendly, I didn't even think before picking her up!)I asked for some rope but noone had any or they didn't feel like looking ( I wasn't getting a good vibe for the dog's welfare from the few people assembled) So I put her down(I HAD too..HEAVY!) and continue feeding her treats. Apparently the restaurant owners had called the police. Another woman approached with bungee cords from the trunk of her car and I eventually get one around the boxer's neck to hold her. I told the woman that I HAD to go move my car, I was blocking traffic. I wanted to take the little girl with me but I was scared that with only the bungee cord on, she would get away and be in the road again since my car was basically still in it. (Funny how the fate of a $26,000 car goes out the window when the life of a dog is on the line) I said to the woman, "Hold her tight, she will want to follow me." Well she didn't and the dog got loose AGAIN. Luckily, a very nice and very smart couple were pulling into the restaurant and opened their car door and let the pup jump in. As I was running to my car, I heard people yelling "Rena, Rena" I went over and asked if they were looking for a boxer and they were. I told them she was next door and they went to get her! Apparently she got out of their fence. I warned them of the intelligence and excellent "paw" use of the boxers, as well as the dangers of having no ID on Rena and went on my way.
I think sometimes that God knows exactly what he is doing. What are the chances that I would run across this girl on a road I never take from a store I never go to and find her owners in a parking lot I have never been in?
She was a doll and I hope she lives a long happy life.
