Does anyone know why my dogs nails might be splitting length wise? Do you have any suggestions as to how to treat this?

Maybe the nails are too long. That's the only reason I can think of right now.

Just had my dogs nails trimmed at the vets so I don't think that the nails are to long, but thanks for your thoughts.
How many of his nails are splitting? if it's only a couple then perhaps he could've tripped on something and broke them. lol maybe someone else could give you some better explanations...

Some dogs just have crappy nails. Paxil's nails split, crack and break all the time. The musher I got her from says her nails have always been like that. When I adopted her, that was one of the things she made sure to point out to me. I keep Paxil's nails as short as possible.
You can buy supplements that are supposed to help with foot and nail health. You might want to check at your local feed store.

It can be because of the trimmers too, I know when my trimmers are on their way out they don't cut well & cause splitting. It could be that they injured themselves on something or just the dog in general.
Make sure you use good, sharp nail trimmers & file them after which should help.
Soar high & free my sweet fur angels. I love you Nanook & Raustyk... forever & ever.
