    Wailing cat

We have a Russian Blue cat-approx. 15+ years old.He has always been vocal when he wants something-but lately he is wailing (loud) at all hours of the night & day.I know his vision isn't so good. Maybe he is frustrated? He also doesn't want to go outside anymore. My husband thinks he (the cat!) needs a kitty pal. I think a younger cat would bug him. Yes he is fixed.

Given your cat's age, I'd say it's age related. But your first order of business is to take him to the vet to make sure there's nothing medically wrong with him, such as a urinary tract infection, ect. As cats get older, they tend to lose some of their hearing and sight. This can scare them. Try putting nightlights in spots where is sleeps, etc. It might help.

I don't think a younger kitten would be good at his age.
My Wilbur howls all the time, but he's always done that.
Have vet check "old man" for illnesses brought on by old age - after all, 15 is a pretty ripe age.
Poor guy is probably pissed at life being unfair - I know I'll be mad enough to scream when my age catches up with me!

    Wailing cat

First of all Welcome to Pet Talk & enjoy all the talks & pictures..
Second of all I have to agree with the others Do Have Your Baby Checked Out By The Vet to make sure all is ok due to his age.. Sure can see why a younger baby playmate would be good.. Good Luck & keep us posted..

Yes, as others have said, do make sure your kitty is okay and not in pain. My cat Beauty sometimes howls in the middle of the night when she has "caught" one of her toys and she wants attention and praise for her success. She will stand in the hall outside my son's bedroom door and howl for as long as it takes until someone speaks to her. But this doesn't sound like what is happening with your cat.

    Funny you should say that.

My cat Zsa-Zsa is blind, and since becoming blind she does wail. When she first became blind, she wailed a lot, almost like she was frustrated, and you'd have to go and stroke her and talk to her to calm her down. Now she's been blind for about 6 months, and she doesn't do it so much now. I think it may be that cats forget what they're doing, where they are and where you are. Wailing is a way that will certainly attract your attention, and will reassure the cat. Maybe you should get your cat's sight checked out, if he can't see that well then he could be wailing for the same reason as Zsa-Zsa is.

The above posts have given excelllent suggestions. When he goes to the vet, have his hearing checked. Older cats can become confused and this could be his way of dealing with it. Give serious thought to a new younger addition. Sometimes it helps, other times, a disaster!! Good luck with your fella. PLease let us know how things turn out..

Maybe he could sleep in your room with you? He'll probably realise then that you're there all the time, so he might stop, at least at night.
