I definatly agree with lisensing breeders. But they never really went into what the lisense would entail -- I believe that a lisense should make it legal to breed your dog only if it has passed the required health certifications, is purebred, matches a standard/temperment, etc. Is that what the lisense does?

That statement made me angry. It is a HUGE problem; Maybe even more severe than activists believe.

I don't agree about the ads in the paper. Sometimes reputable breeders get more pups than they expected or someone that was going to get a pup backs out. I see no problems with placing an ad. Word of mouth isn't always effective. I do agree,though, that the majority of ad-placers are backyard breeders.

I agree with the license requirement legislation & would
support it in my state too. $150.00 is not unreasonable for
a serious breeder. I also disagree with the terrior breeder who
said that this is not a serious problem.

As a Golden breeder yourself, I'd love to hear what you think
of the proposed law.

I agree with the law, but I would make the license fee increase exponentially with the amount of dogs they breed. The more animals you breed and sell, the more your fee is. For example - reputable breeders that breed a litter every couple of years might pay a license fee of $10, if you have a litter a year - $100, 2-5 litters a year $1000, 5-10 litters a year $10000 - something like that. I don't want to punish the reputable breeder that does it for the right reasons and the right way, but you do want to target the ones that are breeding massive amounts of animals over and over again. I really want to see puppy mills out of business, and the only way that is going to happen is by making the business unprofitable. JMHO

I agree with your idea about a sliding scale of a fee depending
on number of litters produced for sale. It would really target the
heavy breeder.

I agree with Clara4457 too.

You have to be carefull not to hurt the reputable breeders.

I have a feeling the back yard breeders will break the
laws and not purchase a license.

And the larger scale sellers/puppy mills breeders should have to pay a much higher fee to insure that the Reputable breeders are not squeezed out.

I think reputable breeders should ban together with animal shelters/rescue groups, kennel clubs, and city officials and jointly find a way to put an end to BYBs and puppy mills so that the reputable breeders aren't the ones being hurt in this process. I don't understand why no one has ever bothered to bring BYBs to the attention of the IRS....hello, these people are making a tax free income and that is illegal.

I agree with this law and about passing certain standards like having medical soundness but not about purebred dogs. I like my mixes too much. Sorry all you cockapoo ext. haters. I think it wouldn't target a reputable breeder as they don't/shouldn't have many litters a year if they are truely reputable.

Lots of people like mutts -- doesn't mean they should be bred. If someone wants a mutt, they should go to a shelter -- they shouldn't support their breeding by buying them from the wrong places (backyard breeders).

Just keep in mind that if people didn't breed mutts we wouldn' have any of the pure breds we have today

Not to get off subject here and correct me if I am
wrong.

If their is a need for a certain type of dog, than
their is a lot more than just putting two different
breeds together.
It takes research and generations
of selective breeding and strict record keeping
to creat a new breed.
I am not a breeder, and I am not an expert on this
subject.

I do not support puppy mills, BYB or pet shops that
sell puppies.

I agree 100% with this law... As I am probably moving to VT when I get married because my future mother-in-law will be selling us her house. I will be trying to keep track of the process of this new law, I hope it passes. I have a great hate for BYB and petstore/puppy mills...
