    Cracked Tooth!

I was just brushing Gonzo's teeth this morning, and I noticed his smallest bottom front tooth is almost completely cracked off! There's only a small chip left, and you can see the root and everything my poor boy, it makes me wanna cry.

I called his vet and we're bringing him in tomorrow morning... Good thoughts for him would be appreciated. When I touch the area, he doesn't even care, and he is chewing fine with no pain at all. I know it must hurt though . I'm so bummed, because one of his molars was slightly chipped over the summer, and I have NO idea how he does it! He never gets hard bones or hard chews or hard toys, and he never chews on rocks or anything. This tooth broke at least within the past week, because I brush his teeth 3 or 4 times a week. I'm just confused. heres poor Gonzy's gap-toothed smile.. its really hard to notice, but its that tiny gap in the bottom front..

    looking pitiful

    Don't worry Gonzo

When Duke was about 2 he broke a tooth by chewing on a 4x4. We fixed that problem, no 4x4's around him anymore(haha). My vet had told me if the nerve is not exposed it wasn't that big of a problem. So it's a great thing that your seeing the vet tomorrow.

My thoughts are with you Gonzo.

hm, kind of a wierd day at the V E T yesterday. She said its such a small bit of tooth left, and he has no pain whatsoever that she could tell, so she said they won't do anything to it. If he needs to be sedated anytime in the future, she said they'd extract the small bit left, but no nerves were exposed so thank GOD they don't have to put him under for that tiny thing.

She said no more raw bones for Gonzo, that this is almost definitely what caused this crack, and the crack in his large canine. She said that if he breaks his large canine again, they'd have to pull it, and stitch it up! I really dont want that happening, so I guess Gonzo wont be having any more bones... what annoys me, is that tons of people I've met in favor of Barf-ing have told me my dogs teeth will rot if he doesnt get bones.. but now my dogs teeth will be ruined if I do give him bones.

besides that, he got his bordatella and his rabies and she said that his ears/coat and everything is gorgeous

    Glad to hear Gonzo's OK

It's nice to hear Gonzo will be ok. Duke's tooth has been cracked since he's a pup and I haven't seen any changes since. He gets the occasional bone (treat every now and then) still gets his "cookies". We just keep an eye out when we do give him a bone on occasion.

    thanks

I think Gonzo must chew too vigorously for his teeth... or something. I am kind of bummed because he loved raw bones, but the meat also made him sick a few times, so I guess its all for the best

Oh Yikes! You didn't read the little warning note about rec bones, huh? Although BARFers adore rec bones, the cleanliness of the teeth comes mostly from RMBs, not rec bones I'm SOOOO sorry nobody told you that sooner. So yes, excessive amounts of rec bones do cause cracked teeth- raw or steamed or boiled or cooked or fried or dunked in chocolate.

Edited to add: Giselle gets a rec bone once a week at most. All that marrow is just too rich for *any* dog.

its ok Giselle I'm just glad it didn't have to be pulled.

But, Gonzo rarely got rec bones or rmb's, at the very most a couple a month. It's just, right after I had given him one I noticed his tooth was cracked. He doesn't chew rocks or anything, so his vet said that bones were definitely the cause.
