    Hey Ben,
Igor is a real cutie! Looks like he likes to climb things, huh? My Yertle loves to try and climb things. Once, in the middle of the night, he tried to climb a stack of CDs that I left on the floor. Of course, he knocked them over, making a lot of noise and waking me up. Little monster...
Anyway, hopefully soon I'll be able to post pictures of Yertle and Charlie.
How do you know how old Igor is? Is there a way you can tell? I have had Yertle for nine years, but I have no idea how old he is.

I don't really know of a sure way to tell the age. When I was about 12, I bought Igor. The Pet store lady told me that she wasn't too sure, but that she thought he was about 12 or 13. 14 years later, I still have igor. I have another turtle that I just purchased at christmas time. I think she is about 6 or 7. The pet store had no idea how old she was. She is about half the size of Igor though. Igor has always been the same size since I got him. I've read somewhere that you can count the line patterns on the bottom of the shell. Igor doesn't have anymore lines there, they're all worn down smooth. But Izzy does, I think I counted 7, but it's not really that clear. can't wait to see yertle. did you know there is a book series called "yertle the turtle"?

Ben, Igor is just precious. As a kid I had two box turtles as pets. We found them on Long Island where we summered. My mom let us bring them home, where they were adored. Every summer we would take them back to L.I. with us. In the morning we would let them roam freely in the woods where we originally found them. In the evening we would tell our water spaniel, Snuffy, "Go find them." Off she would go and return with them gently in her mouth, one at a time, to sleep for the night. I had them for almost 12 years. While I would certainly not take them out of the wild today, I think they had a good life with us in semi-captivity! I loved them dearly, Lou-Lou and Pinky!!

Those lucky turtles. They must have loved living outside. And you had a nice system too. Your dog would find them. How ingenious! That's the problem I have. When I let them out, I have to watch them. I've almost lost Igor before. I was in a bit of a panic but I found him.
