    Registering to Vote...

Thinking it might be too late to vote in California I requested an absentee ballot from Illinois. I did not receive it before leaving so I don't suppose I will. Turns out there is still time to register here.

So I was at the grocery and there was a sidewalk stand registering voters. I thought... worth a try. So I told the guy I had moved here a week ago and had NO identification to show that I lived here. He replied.."Do you have a driver's license?" "Yes, from Illinois." "No problem!"

(He told me I could vote any way I wanted to but he would only get paid if I indicated a certain political party. Typical of them... I guess he won't get paid as I refuse to indicate ANY party....He also told me I had to check "Mrs.".... didn't do that either.... )

So, I am now a registered voter in California...without showing any identification or proof of residency.

And I thought only in Chicago was voting so easy....

    Vote early and vote often!

Well, honestly I'm glad you got registered, but, it's kind of scary that it was that easy.....

And since I've been gone for so long, I didn't even know you moved! Where are you in Cali?

It didn't use to be that easy, but they had to change some things to make college students elligable to vote. I know that was a concern for me when I first moved out here because I still had a Texas drivers liscence and really had no proof of being an arizona resident.

I too thought it was only this easy in Chicago.

Actually, I remember it being a bit more difficult in Chicago. They absolutely positively needed a minimum of two forms of ID and a credit card didn't count. You had to have two things showing your current address and one of them had to be a state issued ID (either driver's license or ID). I remember it being a problem for me when I first moved here becuase I kept my WI driver's license for at least a year after I got here.

Anyway, glad to here you got registered and glad to hear California is in on the vote early and vote often thing too. Makes you feel a little more at home anyway.

I have an US American co-worker and he received his ballot these days (he registered online for voting in Florida). The funny thing: In the package of materials there is an envelope in which to put the ballot. On the envelope, big black letters read "secrecy envelope". But the envelope is open, without a lid to close it!

He is now thinking of what happens when he closes that envelope by tape. Maybe the vote is no longer valid?
